Anastasia
Producers include: Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty, David Newman, Trevor Horn, Emelio Estefan Jr. Engineers include: John Kurlander, Danny Wallin, Stephen Fitzmaurice. Principally recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York; Sony Scoring Stage, The Village Recorder, Signet Sound and M5 Studios, Los Angeles, California. ANASTASIA's soundtrack captures all the majesty and drama of the animated tale of love and intrigue. Liz Callaway's bright, pretty voiceis well-suited to the role of Anastasia, the legendary last survivor of the Romanovs, while Kelsey Grammer is lovable as Vladimir, the fallen aristocrat who befriends her. Jim Cummings is the sinister villain Rasputin, and Bernadette Peters rounds out the film's sterling cast as the regal Sophie. In addition to orchestral music, the ANASTASIA soundtrack contains contributions by some of today's biggest pop artists--Richard Marx and Donna Lewis duet on "At The Beginning, " R&B songstress injects a more modern flair with the warm, feel-good theme "Journey To The Past," and country belter Deanna Carter delivers a huskier, more acoustic version of "Once Upon A December," which is sung earlier in the film by Anastasia in a more orchestral form. Growing Up In Public
Donnacha Costello relocated from Dublin to New York City in 1998, transplanting his love of minimal production design to a new setting. Releases on Costello's autonomous Minimise imprint caught ears worldwide, eventually leading Achim Szepanski, Frankfurt's titan of experimental electronica, to recruit Costello for his influential Force Inc. label. On GROWING UP IN PUBLIC, Costello's clean "click-house" tracks deploy varied combinations of digital and dub treatments, pursuing minimal means to maximal ends.Space infuses "Int" and "Rem," turning patterns of bass, bleeps, and beats into audible illusions of infinity. The seemingly rigid rhythms of "Isolate" and "Lateral Thinking" redouble and disperse, recalling the deceptive repetition underlying the work of minimalist magi Steve Reich, John Cage, and Tony Conrad. When Costello couples such techniques with the sound-bending trickery of dub science, the results, such as "Lbp," "Var," and "Melan," are nothing short of gorgeous. SKU: 1046409

It includes a 32 page book with photos from throughout Clapton's career and a 6,000 word history of Clapton. All of the set's 73 songs have been digitally remastered for this release; in most cases, the source material was the original master tapes or original multi-tracks. All of the set's Derek And The Dominoes material is previously unreleased. In November 1990, CROSSROADS became the first CD box set to be certified platinum. The release of the 4-CD box set CROSSROADS is the perfect package to commemorate Eric Clapton's first 25 years of making music. Starting out as a blues purist with the like-minded Yardbirds, Clapton left after the band moved in a decidedly more pop direction. He began an apprenticeship under John Mayall. Encouraged to indulge in his love for the songs of Freddie King ("Hideaway") and Robert Johnson ("Ramblin' On My Mind") among others, Clapton metamorphosed into a guitar god after forming Cream with two of Mayall's sidemen, Jack Bruce and SKU: 1001657

Let It Be
The Beatles: George Harrison, John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, bass, guitar, piano); Ringo Starr (drums). Additional personnel: Billy Preston (keyboards). Thelast Beatles' release of new material (although it was recorded before ABBEY ROAD) features songs recorded live in the studio and at the famous "rooftop session." On the back of the sleeve is the ironic note: 'This is a new phase Beatles album'. The new phase being, here are four maturing men growing apart and desperately needing a break from each other. The accompanying film is too painful to watch, as tempers fray and tension is in the air. In addition to the title track, only 'Get Back' and maybe 'Long And Winding Road' rate as great Beatles songs. The others are all brief entertainments and scraps of tunes. Lennon and Harrison had already moved on in their heads and McCartney was left to paste it together. The overwhelming feeling of this album is one of incredible sadness. SKU: 1005283

Live Texas Tornado
The Sir Douglas Quintet: Doug Sahm (vocals, guitar); Augie Meyers (organ); Speedy Sparks (bass); Johnny Perez (drums). Additional personnel: Alvin Crow (vocals, fiddle); Louis Ortega (guitar); Rocky Morales (saxophone). Recorded live at Club Foot, Austin, Texas & TheWhiskey, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Michael Point. Doug Sahm once said, "Texas is a big state and it's full of music. Anybody who focuses on just one part of it is missing most of the good stuff." At the time of this album's release, Sahm had been living and breathing all of the music he could, both recording and performing under his own name and with the Sir Douglas Quintet (and later, with the Texas Tornados). This live album dates from the early '80s and is a beautiful blend of selections from two shows (one at the Whiskey in L.A., the other from Austin, TX). The set draws from the Quartet's rich back catalog. There are the hits ("Mendocino," "She's About A Mover," "[Is Anybody Going To] San Antone"), and some touchstone cover selections (Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," T-Bone Walker's "T-Bone Shuffle," Buddy Holly's "Oh, Boy."). Throughout it all, Augie Meyer's pulsing organ adds color, humor, style, and surprise. SKU: 3105098

Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Belle And Sebastian: Stuart Murdoch (vocals, guitar); Stevie Jackson (guitar); Sarah Martin (violin); Mick Cooke (trumpet, bass); Chris Geddes (keyboards); Bobby Kildea (bass); Richard Colburn (percussion). For a band with such a modest, homespun feel as Scottish cult heroes Belle and Sebastian, the utilization of a big pop producer like Trevor Horn could easily have been a tragic mistake. Instead, it proves to be a stroke of brilliance. Rather than doling out the kind of overblown mountains of sound he's heapedon artists like Seal and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Horn simply expands the B&S palette in a completely organic, extremely effective manner. The arrangements are more fleshed-out than usual, the textures more varied, and the overall sound a bit more sprightly and sunny. All this is to the good, however, as the band's unerring melodic sensibility and gently quirky lyricism remain joyfully intact. The interaction of Belle and Sebastian's trademark twisted-twee songcraft and the effervescence of Horn's production makes DEAR CATASTROPHE WAITRESS one of the group's most instantly appealing albums. Development [ECD]
Nonpoint: Andrew Goldman (vocals, guitar); Elias Soriano (vocals); KB (bass); Robb Rivera (drums). Recorded at Elysian Studios, Boca Raton, Florida. Floridian metal purveyors Nonpoint have grown immensely since their debut, STATEMENT introduced them to the masses in 2000. As MCA's flagship nu metal act, the quartet made its bones, touring with every significant contemporary heavy band that would have them (including Staind, Linkin Park, and making a serious impact on the legendary Ozzfest touring festival, to name just a few). The connecting thread that meshes the disc's 12 tracksis summed up simply in the title; DEVELOPMENT. The band's collaborative songwriting craft is tighter, more mature, while maintaining the precious grooves that turned heads with STATEMENT. Taking cues from their rap-metal brethren, Nonpoint have made the jump to melodic singing taking precedence over their initial hip-hop leanings. Vocalist Elias Soriano sounds at times like a sandpapery Maynard James Keenan (Tool). The shotgun syncopation in "Circles" is matched only by it's feverishly catchy chorus. Guitarist Andrew Goldman's thoughtful chordal voicings show that there is truly hope for nu metal, as he reaches far beyond the down-tuned, chugging, single-note unison riffs the genre is notorious for. Clearly, Nonpoint is a band on the rise, and metal fans will only benefit from their continued progression and DEVELOPMENT. SKU: 1073940

Moanin' [Remastered]
Full performer name: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of MOANIN' includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Benny Golson (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jymie Merritt (bass). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on October 30, 1958. Originally released on Blue Note (4003). Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey). This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. If you simply can only have one Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers disc (and why would you stop there?), it absolutely must be MOANIN'. This 1958 Blue Note date is the cream of the early Messengers' studio sessions. The group of this period featured the wailing Lee Morgan (trumpet), the swinging Benny Golson (sax) and the soulful Bobby Timmons (piano) with longtime bassist Jymie Merritt by Blakey's side. All of the pieces fell into place here to create one of themost hard-swinging, blues-inflected records in jazz history. Timmons' classic title cut sets the pace as it's laid-back call-and-response chorus and swinging bridge will get in your soul and start your head bobbing. Golson's bouncing "Are You Real" and the subtle "Along Came Betty" feature that golden Messengers ensemble sound that can't be matched as Blakey drives his men mercilessly. The most dynamic tracks, of course, are the drum feature "The Drum Thunder Suite," a Blakey tour-de-force, and the powerful "Blues March" featuring Art's signature shuffle groove. A delightful reading of the standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine" caps it all off. This is the one to get first. SKU: 1014821

This continues a boy band tradition of questioning,if not actually biting, the hand that feeds, stretching from the Beatles through the Monkees, David Cassidy, the Bay City Rollers, and more recent contenders such as New Kids On The Block. This type of manuever usually precedes a catastrophic drop in sales and /or acrimonious split. Regardless of whether CELEBRITY is a portent of disaster, it's an effective amalgamation of thoughtful, sometimes acerbic pop in the band's bubbly, R&B lite tradition ("Celebrity," "The Game Is Over"--the latter using arcade game noises to good percussive effect) interspersed with the ageless boy-girl dramas, such as "Girlfriend" and "Just Don't Tell Me That," that N Sync does so well. The low-key, string-colored ballad "Gone" is particularly effective, using a similar treated guitar effect to Madonna's "Don't Tell Me," while the down and dirty, self-descriptive "Up Against the Wall" is the band's insurance against any accusations of hyper-cuteness. Candyass
Orgy: Jay, Ryan, Amir, Bobby, Paige. Additional personnel: Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar); Josh Abraham, Jay Gordon (synthesizer, programming); Elijah Blue (synthesizer, background vocals); Dieter (drums); Anthony Valcic (programming); Jonathan Davis (background vocals). Recorded at Donner Pass Cabin, Truckee, California; N.R.G. Studios, North Hollywood, California; Josh's Garage, Hollywood, California; Westlake Audio, West Hollywood, California. Detractors will undoubtedly peg them as Marilyn Manson imitators, but that's like putting down Stevie Ray Vaughan for his Hendrixisms. The band works well within the parameters of their chosen genre, and if you go for the industrial-inflected synth rock of Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, etc., you'd be foolish to overlook CANDYASS. The sonic assualt is almost unrelentingly brutal, as pounding drums, jackhammer guitars and wailing, buzzing synths (all heavily processed) pin your ears back. The cold, detached vocal style matches the uncompromising electro-rock arrangements perfectly. Apocalyptic, iconoclastic and willfully abrasive, ORGY is the worst nightmare ofevery teen's parents, and that's what rock & roll's all about. SKU: 1006119

Movement, The [PA]
Personnel: Inspectah Deck, Street Life, Kool G Rap, Killa Sin (rap vocals); Mojehan (background vocals). Producers: Fantom Of The Beats, Ayatolla, Falling Down, Arabian Night. Even though Inspectah Deck might not have as high a profile as Wu-Tang compatriots like ODBor Method Man, he's no less talented. His first solo album, UNCONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, was bursting with the kind of hardcore, street-level hip-hop that had become so dead to Wu-Tang fans. Apparently he was pretty busy with group projects after that, since it took four years for this follow-up to appear. Deck gets to the point right away, as THE MOVEMENT's intro finds him declaring "gone are the days of that commercial hip-hop." The sound he offers up as an alternative to hip-pop fluff is full of evocative, occasionally almost dub-like loops, and uncompromising rhymes that ooze street-cred without getting too caught up in hollow thug-life bravado. There's a dark lyrical tinge to THE MOVEMENT, but the pure visceral energy of Deck's style generates enough energy to keep depression at bay. SKU: 1084587

Beginnings [Remastered]
The 2 original albums ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND (January, 1970) and IDLEWILD SOUTH (October, 1970) arealso available seperately on 2 remastered CDs. Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, piano, organ); Berry Oakley (vocals, bass); Duane Allman (acoustic & slide guitars); Dickey Betts (guitar); Thom Doucette (harmonica, percussion); Jai Johnny Johanson (drums, percussion, congas, timbales); Butch Trucks (drums, percussion, timbales, maracas). Producers: Tom Dowd, Adrian Barber, Joel Dorn. Engineers include: Adrian Barber, Ron Albert, Howie Albert. ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, New York. IDLEWILD SOUTH recorded at Regent Sound Studios, New York, New York; Capricorn Sound Studios, Macon, Georgia; Atlantic South-Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida. Includes liner notes by Jean-Charles Costa. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Originally issued in 1973, BEGINNINGS was a two-record set that repackaged the Allman Brothers' first two releases, 1969's THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND and 1970's IDLEWILD SOUTH. When the compilation was issued on CD, both albums fit on a single disc, making BEGINNINGS something of a bargain, and a good starting point for new fans. The music captures the Allmans at their early stages and features soon-to-be deceased members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Highlights include the jam-fest "Whipping Post" (which would soon take on an onstage life all its own), as well as the slightly psychedelic "Dreams," the soaring "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and the road anthem "Midnight Rider." The roots of Southern rock can be minutely inspected on BEGINNINGS. SKU: 4122668

About Time
The Stranglers include:J.J. Burnell (vocals, bass). Because the Stranglers went over a decade and a half with the same lineup--making them by far the longest-lived of the original British punk bands--it was widely assumed that when singer Hugh Cornwell left for a solo career in the early '90s, the group would simply split up. Instead, J.J. Burnel, Jet Black and Dave Greenfield hired two new guys, singer Paul Roberts and guitarist John Ellis, and started a new phase of their career with 1993's IN THE NIGHT. That album's follow-up, 1995's ABOUT TIME, integrates the two new members more fully into the band, with the result that while this is still recognizably a Stranglers album--Burnel's hyperactive bass playing remains the group's sonic signature--it's definitely a new and different Stranglers. Roberts's Bowie-like croon and Ellis's slashing guitar style are more recognizably "punk" than anything the Stranglers had previously delivered, and Roberts's lyrics are less confrontational than Cornwell's had often been. Little Something Extra, A
Personnel includes: William Bell (vocals). Booker T & The MG's: Booker T. Jones (keyboards); Steve Cropper (guitar); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr (drums). The Mar-Key Horns: Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Andrew Love, Floyd Newman, Packy Axton, Gilbert Caples, Gene Parker, Joe Arnold (saxophone). Producers include: Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, Al Jackson Jr., Isaac Hayes. Recorded at Stax Records, Memphis, Tennessee, in 1962 and 1965-67. Includes liner notes by Rob Bowman. Like Marvin Gaye's similar LOVE STARVED HEART, this collection of 20 previously unreleased songs from the mid-'60s golden age of Southern soul feels like a Greatest Hits album piped in from some alternative universe. Had they been released, some if not all of these tracks wouldhave charted; most of them, in fact, are fully as good as Bell's more famous singles. Stylistically, there's a lot of variety. "Quittin' Time," for example, is a straight blues whereas "Love Will Find a Way" is a gorgeous Sam Cooke-influenced ballad. Best of all, however, is a stunning, slowed-down version of Carole King's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," in which Bell plumbs depths of feeling that the Shirelles' version never hinted at.
