Eldorado (A Symphony By The Electric Light Orchestra) [Remastered]
Electric LightOrchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, Moog synthesizer); Richard Tandy (guitar, Moog synthesizer); Mik Kaminsky (violin); Hugh McDowell, Michael Edwards (cello); Michael De Albequerque (bass); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion). Producer: Jeff Lynne. Reissue producers: Jeff Lynne, Al Quaglieri. Recorded at De Lane Lea Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Jeff Lynne. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studio, New York, New York). Though 1974's ELDORADO is subtitled "A Symphony by the Electric Light Orchestra" and features both a portentous spoken-word prologue and an instrumental finale, this album marks Jeff Lynne's final break from classical-rock fusion in the Emerson, Lake & Palmer sense. Though there're a handful of recognizable lifts from classical and romantic composers, particularly in the swelling opening of "Boy Blue" and the grandly-titled "Illusions in G Major," most of the orchestral arrangements here are in service to Lynne's increasingly accomplished pop songs. One of those is "Can't Get It Out of My Head," a classic '70s pop ballad and FM radio staple that's among Lynne's very best work. Though this was the only hit single on ELDORADO, the rest of the album is nearly as strong. "Laredo Tornado," a Lennonesque mid-tempo strut recalling ELO's earlier hit "Showdown," is a particular standout. Worldwide superstardom was just around the corner. SKU: 1060956

White Lilies Island
Personnel includes: Natalie Imbruglia (vocals); Sally Herbert (arranger); Gavin Wright (conductor); Phil Thornalley (acoustic guitar, keyboards, bass); Dave Munday (guitar, flute, Mellotron); Gary Clark (guitar, keyboards); Paul Statham (guitar, programming); Neil Taylor, Gary Clark (guitar); The Brilliant Strings, London Session Orchestra (strings); Ian Stanley (keyboards); Guy Pratt, Ged Grimes (bass); Maz, Chuck Sabo (drums); Marc Fox (percussion); John Dunne, James Banbury (programming); Tessa Niles (background vocals). Producers include: Ian Stanley, Pascal Gabriel, Gary Clark, Phil Thornalley. Engineers include: Ian Stanley, Phil Thornalley, Fred De Faye. This follow up to 1998's wildly successful LEFT OF THE MIDDLE is full of the pop hooks that propelled that album to the top of the UK and US charts; in addition the intervening few years seem to have left the Natalie Imbruglia with a somewhat more mature pop sensibility. Her voice is still reminiscent of Lisa Loeb or a less-unhinged Fiona Apple, but the Australian singer's previous eager-to-please quality is tempered by the world-weary narrative of tracks such as"Talk in Tongues" ("flowers in the bin/close this hole I'm in") that undercut the sunny textures of songs like the Joni-flavored "Satellite." Generally Imbruglia is at her best when she's least produced; her voice has more than enough commercial appeal without the assistance of tricky arrangements. Though some of WHITE LILIES ISLAND comes perilously close to falling into PJ Harvey-lite territory, the aforementioned brooding "Talking in Tongues," "Butterflies," and the powerful, anthemic, string-accompanied "Come September" point to a growing confidence in the singer that bodes well for the future. Flesh Of My Flesh Blood Of My Blood
Personnel includes: DMX, Swizz Beatz, Drag-On, The Lox, Jay-Z (rap vocals); Mary J. Blige, Marilyn Manson, Tamyra Grey (vocals); Rich Keller (guitar, keyboards, bass). Producers include: Swizz Beatz, PK, Irv Gotti & Rebel, DJ SHOK, Dame Grease. Engineers include: Rich Keller, Adam Gazzola. Get at me dog! DMX returns with his sophomore album, FLESH OF MY FLESH BLOOD OF MY BLOOD, a sixteen cut collection of tracks that scream with energy and vocal prowess. In a move that bucks the trend of collaboration-heavy albums, FLESH OF MY FLESH BLOOD OF MY BLOOD, has only a few strategically placed collaborations. The Lox and Jay-Z drop science on "Blackout," while Mary J. Blige adds her smooth R&B touch to "Coming From." Perhaps the most improbable pairing is on "The Omen," which features Shock-turned-Glam Rocker Marilyn Manson. The track uses a sample from the famous horror movie of the same name from the late 1970's. Various producers including Swizz Beatz ("It's All Good"), PK and Dame Grease ("Dogs For Life") handle the beats, which range from street hard to jazzy smooth. Overall, DMX never fails to deliver the goods. SKU: 1000602

Live At The London Palladium [Remastered]
Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals); David T. Walker, Ray Parker (guitar); James Getzoff, Jack Shulman (violin); Ernie Watts (saxophone); Paul Hubinon (trumpet); George Bohanon (trombone); Joe Sample (keyboards); James Jamerson (bass); Ed Green (drums); Joe Clayton (congas); John Arnold (percussion); Eric Dolen, Charles Burns, Dwight Owens, Michael Torrance, Wally Cox (background vocals). Recorded live at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland, California on January 4, 1974. Originally released on Tamla (333). Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios, Edison, New Jersey). This 1974 concert documents a superb performer at the height of his popularity. The show was a rare treat for fans, since Gaye was just coming off a three-year, self-imposed period of isolation and a refusal to sing in public. The artist's reputed nervousness and fragility are nowhere in evidence, however, as he burns through superior treatments of such classics as "Trouble Man," What's Going On," "Inner City Blues," "How Sweet It Is (To Be LovedBy You)," and the unsurpassable "Let's Get It On." Gaye croons with soulful intensity throughout, in a sweet and silky tenor. If the waves of female screams emanating from the audience are any indication, his voice is doing exactly what it should. A definitive version of "Distant Lover" proves a particular highlight for the excitable crowd. Gene Page's jazz-tinted orchestrations frame Gaye's performances nicely, and the band lends the proceedings an air that is equal parts raw groove and smooth sophistication. MARVIN GAYE LIVE! is an outstanding disc, showcasing one of soul and pop music's greatest voices. SKU: 1014950

Difficult To Cure [Remastered]
Rainbow includes: Joe Lynn Turner (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). All tracks have been digitally remastered. DIFFICULT TO CURE features Rainbow's third and final vocalist, Joe Lynn Turner, whose prettier image and more subdued vocals lend themselves to this 1981 release. "I Surrender" is the album's featured single and the group's bid at FM success. Richie Blackmore's riffs are less evident and the background vocals and slick production are symbolic of the era. "Spotlight Kid" is a return to rockin' form, and features wonderful interplay between Blackmore and keyboardist Don Airey. The group's transformation from metal to rock is evident in the Billy Squier-sounding "No Release." "Can't Happen Here" expresses the sense of paranoia so common in an increasingly technological world. The drumming by new member Bobby Rondinelli's may more about power than precision, but he is relentless on "Freedom Fighter." The band closes the record with a dip back into its past with the epic title track. Though DIFFICULT may not appeal to fans of the band's early material, it stands on its own as a fine hard-rock album. SKU: 5031186

Ten Thousand Angels
Personnel: Mindy McCready (vocals); Don Potter, Tom Hemby, Larry Byrom (acoustic guitar); Dann Huff (electric guitar); Sonny Garrish, Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Mary Ann Kennedy (mandolin, background vocals); Rob Hajacos (fiddle); Jimmy Nichols (strings, piano, keyboards, background vocals); The Nashville String Machine (strings); Terry McMillan (harmonica); John Hobbs (piano); Richard "Spady" Brannan (bass); Paul Leim (drums); Kathy Burdick, Norro Wilson (background vocals); Richie McDonald. Engineers include: Kevin Beamish, David Malloy, Jimmy Nichols. Recorded at Sound Stage, Malloy Boys Studio and Javelina Recording, Nashville, Tennessee. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. You should know this much, going in: Mindy McCready makes '90's Nashville music. Country-inflected, slick but slightly rocking, big-sounding, American music. Unlike so many of her Nashville sisters, however, McCready seems willing to tackle some real issues: double-standards in relationships, for instance. In pure, clear fashion, she twangs, "Get over it honey, love's a two-way street/Oryou won't be a man of mine/Sure I had a few beers with the girls last night/Guys do it all the time." But McCready isn't all brass and chutzpah. "Have A Nice Day" is unadulterated country at its best, an almost painful snapshot of two people separated by circumstance, yet precipitously close to being lovers. It's a song about what a woman wants to say, yet knows she can't. McCready delivers this tale with power and real emotion. It's a song about a moment, a real-life moment. Isn't that what country's all about? SKU: 1000994

Life, The
Personnel includes: Ginuwine (vocals); Ludacris (rap vocals). Producers include: Troy Oliver, Raphael Saadiq, Ginuwine, Cory Rooney, Loren Dawson. Engineers include: Mario Luccy, Richie Jones, Dan Hetzel. When it comes to R&B, Ginuwine is one of only a handful of artists thatrepresent the total package. Singing, songwriting, dancing, and just plain driving the ladies crazy, the DC native does it all, and does it well. On his third album, THE LIFE, Ginuwine returns with yet another dose of bump and grind music. "There It Is (Shit 4 Nothin')," the album's leadoff single, finds the sexy singer answering to a jealous girlfriend. The song is a likely anthem for any male who is tired of his possessive woman. Songs like "2way" and "The Show After the Show" have a futuristic tinge, with their contemporary concepts and ultramodern beats. THE LIFE reunites Ginuwine with producer Timbaland, but also allows the singer an opportunity to work with Raphael Saadiq and others. Influenced by both Michael Jackson and Prince, Ginuwine puts entertainment back into R&B music. SKU: 1057058

Telekon [Remastered]
TELEKON contains five bonus tracks which includes an 'A' side, 'B' side singles and an out-take. Personnel includes: Gary Numan (vocals, guitar, piano, Mini-Moog, Arp); R. Bell (guitar, piano, claves, background vocals); Christopher Payne (viola, piano, Mini-Moog); D. Haines (piano, Arp); Paul Gardiner (bass, background vocals); Cedric Sharpley (drums, background vocals); John Webb, James Freud (handclaps). Engineers: Nick Smith, Steve Smith, Graeme Myhre. Includes liner notes by SteveMalins. 1980's TELEKON was Gary Numan's first album after the surprise chart success of its predecessor THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE and "Cars," its seemingly deathless hit single. Numan could have easily created "Cars, Part II," but chose not to do so. Instead, the songs on TELEKON are spikier and almost willfully abstruse, wrapping Numan's usual J.G. Ballard and Philip K. Dick-inspired lyrics of anomie and isolation in complex synthesizer music. TELEKON often recalls some of the Krautrock bands of the '70s, particularly Faust and the knottier elements of Amon Duul II. In the UK, Numan was still a big enough star that the album's single, the chilly "I Die You Die," was a substantial hit. But the lack of a clever follow-up to "Cars" resigned Numan to one-hit-wonder status for all in the US except his devoted cult following. The CD includes five bonus tracks, including an electronic version of Erik Satie's "Trois Gymnopedies." SKU: 1008059

Second Toughest In The Infants
Underworld: Karl Hyde, Darren Emerson, Rick Smith. Underworld's position in the budding electronic universe is unique: Each of its songs is as much a pop tune as a deftly sculpted rhythm track. Not the usual three-minute pop, but interwoven epics that develop over twice the length, using rhythms and loops rather than verses and choruses as building blocks. On SECOND TOUGHEST IN THE INFANTS (a nod to the hardships of sophomore outings), Karl Hyde, Rick Smith and Darren Emerson create a haunting new language built of dub, ambient, techno, jungle and rock textures, all set to a bass-heavy pulse. And even that fails to describe the dark, dreamlike atmospheres that the trio creates. First off, there are the rhythmic overdoses. The opening "Juanita," clocking in at an epic 16 minutes, features layered, percolating percussion that rides an incessant techno throb down a highway into a psychedelic sunset. "Rowla" takes a punky, distorted-beyond-repair keyboard loop and drops it in the middleof the dance floor, where it roars like the Tasmanian devil. Most unusual of all is "Blueski," a three-minute instrumental that slows the pace around a bluesy slide-guitar loop, evoking a late-night scene in a parallel universe. All these sounds are parts of Underworld's expansive domain, unified by the aforementioned pulse and the search for more of it. SKU: 6386723

Seven More Minutes
The Rentals: Matt Sharp (vocals); Rod Cervera (acoustic & electric guitars); Jim Richards (trombone, piano, Moog & ARP synthesizers); Kevin March (drums). Additional personnel: Tim Wheeler (6- & 12 string acoustic guitars, background vocals); Miki Berenyi, Maya Rudolph, Petra Haden, Donna Matthews, Sharon McConochie (vocals); Danny Frankel (percussion); Damon Albarn (background vocals). For his second turn at bat, ex-Weezer Matt Sharp swings and knocks one out of the park. Popping you upside the head with one great song after another, The Rentals defy the phenomenon known as "the sophomore slump" and score big with SEVEN MORE MINUTES. Looking resplendent in his shaggy hair and polka-dot shirt (out with the turbo-geek, in with the retro-chic) and fresh from his bacchanal in Barcelona, Sharp keeps a party-like vibe going throughout much of the disc. Some of the players on The Rentals team this season include Damon Alborn from Blur, Tim Wheeler from Ash, and onceagain, Petra Haden from THAT DOG is adding her wonderful vocals. The nerd shtick is gone, but in its place are infectious songs and flat-out fun. SKU: 1017774

Notorious Byrd Brothers, The [Remastered]
The Byrds: Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Michael Clarke. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Includes liner notes by David Fricke and Johnny Rogan. Building on the maturity of their previous effort YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY, the Byrds delivered a suite of songs that naturally flow into one another with uncanny ease. It is one of the few vinyl releases where both sides would always be played, and 30 years later it begs to be heard uninterrupted--played individually, the songs lose their power. This was an artistic triumph and a commercial disappointment, as thememory of Crosby faded only to be replaced (allegedly) by a horse on the album sleeve. The Byrds moved on to their country phase and numerous line-ups but they were never to sound so perfect again. SKU: 5068538

What A Girl Wants (Music From & Inspired By The Motion Picture)
Score another one for the Nickelodeon set as that channel's icon Amanda Bynes continues her foray onto the silver screen with a film that's yielded the teen-friendly soundtrack WHAT A GIRL WANTS. Bynes's character Daphne Reynolds is a duck-out-of-water American flying to the UK to meet an aristocratic English dad unaware of her existence, and most of the songs are fairly dead-on commentaries on specific plot points. The Clash's "London Calling" is obvious travel music, Meredith Brooks' infectious "Crazy" undoubtedly refers to this kooky overseas trip, and the Donnas' trashy rave-up "Who Invited You" asks the obvious question of Miss Reynolds. Other notable artists popping up are British garage icon Craig David with the electro-funk "What's Your Flava?" and sensitive singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik crooning his way through the soaring "Half-Life." Otherwise, this soundtrack is a great staging ground for up-and-coming artists ranging from Gwen Stefani-esque Holly Valance ("Kiss Kiss"), the Britney-flavored Willa Ford ("I Wanna Be Bad"), and Britpop troubadour Gavin Thorpe("Out of Place"). You Are Free
Cat Power includes: Chan Marshall (vocals, guitar). If catharsis is the name of the game, then Cat Power (AKA Chan Marshall) handily achieves this goal with YOU ARE FREE, her first studio album of original material since 1998's MOON PIX. She's a master at making more outof less, and to say Marshall's arrangements are sparse is an understatement. That said, songs like "Maybe Not" and "I Don't Blame You" benefit immensely from the solo piano accompaniment that gently prods along this southern singer-songwriter's creaky vocals. Even when she adds instrumentation, a measured approach keeps everything tight, whether Marshall is howling in front of Dave Grohl (who plays bass and drums), on the hypnotic, guitar-driven "Speak For Me," or delivering an ethereal cover of Michael Hurley's "Werewolf" that features David Campbell's evanescent string arrangements. In singing about various facets of freedom, Chan Marshall addresses her lover's unhealthy lifestyle (the mournful "Babydoll") and inability to open up (an echo-drenched "Half of You"). Along with Grohl, Eddie Vedder puts in a pair of appearances. The Pearl Jam frontman loses himself within the murmured duet "Evolution" and "Good Woman," the fullest-sounding song on the album, like a modern-day Lomax recording with its scratchy fiddle, buzzing guitar, and spooky harmonies.
