Behind Closed Doors [Remastered]
Personnel: Charlie Rich (vocals, piano); The Jordanaires, The Nashville Edition. Producer: Billy Sherrill. Reissue Producer: Al Quaglieri. Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee in between 1971 and 1973. Originally released on Epic (32247). Includes liner notesby Chet Flippo and Raul Malo. Digitally remastered by Joseph Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). A truly great voice of American music, Charlie Rich began pursuing his musical vision in the 1950s, but it wasn't until this 1973 release that he achieved a major commercial breakthrough. Along the way, he tackled a mix of blues, pop, country, and R&B with such grace that many critics put him on par with Elvis Presley, and Rich's early work easily marks him as Elvis's peer aesthetically, if not commercially. That all changed with BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. To capture the ear of mainstream America, Rich adopted the strings-and-choir-enhanced "countrypolitan" aesthetic so popular in Nashville at the time. While others rode that approach to crossover schlock, Rich kept it classy, and the songs here are always served (but never overpowered) by the arrangements. On "I Take it on Home" and "A Sunday Kind of Woman," Rich's R&B roots can be detected, but it's the romantic ballads, "The Most Beautiful Girl" and the title tune that made Rich a superstar after years of flirting with success. For a summary of Rich's eclectic early work, turn to the FEEL LIKE GOING HOME collection, but for an introduction to the Charlie Rich embraced by millions, look no further than this reissue, which comes complete with tasty bonus cuts. Mingus Dynasty [Remastered]
This remastered edition of MINGUS DYNASTY features four ofthe original tracks in unedited form and a bonus track. Personnel: Charles Mingus (bass); Booker Ervin, John Handy, Benny Golson (saxophones); Jerome Richardson (saxophone, flute); Donald Ellis, Dick Williams (trumpets); James Knepper (trombone); Maurice Brown, Seymour Barab (cello); Theodore Cohen (vibraphone); Roland Hanna (piano); Dannie Richmond (drums). Reissue producer: John Snyder. Recorded in New York on November 1 and 13, 1959. Includes liner notes by Brian Priestley. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. This is part of the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series. For the legendary bass virtuoso and composer Charles Mingus, 1959 was a watershed year. On the two November sessions which comprise MINGUS DYNASTY, the bassist achieved a rare balance between the excitement of spontaneous invention, and the controlled intensity of carefully crafted group forms. MINGUS DYNASTY appears on CD for the first time with all of Mingus' post-performance edits intact. Mingus the jazz composer had an abiding affection for traditional forms, such as gospel and Dixieland, and a deep devotion to the innovations of modernists Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker. Thus you have the sanctified celebration of "Slop," the earthy blues of "Put Me In That Dungeon," and the firey drive of "Gunslinging Bird," where church rhythms, blues feeling and jazz harmony co-mingle in a swelter of powerful solos and colorful ensemble passages. Mingus' affection for the music of Ellington is plainly evident in inspired covers of Mercer Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" (with fine idiomatic solos by trombonist Jimmy Knepper, tenorist Booker Ervin and Mingus) and an atmospheric "Mood Indigo," in which Mingus modulates tempos and moods every bit as effectively as he traverses chord changes. Likewise the bassist's own "Diane," "Song With Orange" and "Far Wells, Mill Valley," where his charts evidence an affection both for 20th century classicism and ancient blues. And the incredibly swinging rhythm section of bassist Mingus, drummer Dannie Richmond and pianist Roland Hanna make MINGUS DYNASTY a timeless recording. SKU: 5068506

Siren [Remastered]
Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards); Phil Manzanera (guitar); Edwin Johnson (strings, keyboards, synthesizer); Andrew Mackay (oboe, saxophone); John Gustafson (bass); Paul Thompson (drums). Recorded at Air Studios, London, England in 1975. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Roxy Music's fifth album, SIREN, is a return to the form of their first couple of records--that is, itmixes astonishing material with some that, well, isn't quite as good. This is not to say that the band abandoned sophistication, however. If anything, they turned the suaveness up a notch--tracks like "Sentimental Fool" and the brilliant "Just Another High" both, albeit in different ways, suggest the path the band would follow before arriving at their masterpiece, AVALON. For those keeping track of these things, the cover model on this album is Jerry Hall. "Love Is The Drug," the album's first track, is a classic. A story-song that could describe the beginning of the relationship that dissolves in "Dance Away" (from MANIFESTO, the band's next studio album), it is built on solid rhythm grooves with added flourishes of bright guitar. Bryan Ferry's vocals are more expressive than usual on "Both Ends Burning," a fairly sedate, but insistent dance groove with synthesizers weaving in and out of the propulsive bass line. SIREN, as the middle album in the band's studio career, includes pointers to both their past and future and is an excellent introduction to the worlds of Roxy Music. SKU: 1025443

Harem World Tour, The (Live From Las Vegas)
Personnel: Sarah Brightman (vocals); Gunther Laudahn (vocals, guitar, bouzouki, harp, lute, sitar, keyboards); Markus Birkle (guitars); Markus Koessler (keyboards, bass instrument); Jan-Eric Kohrs (keyboards); Flo Dauner (drums); Roland Peil, Ronnie Barak (percussion). Recording information: MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada. Considering her lengthy career in musicals and her onetime role as wife and muse of Broadway's golden boy Andrew Lloyd Webber, it's surprising that it took until 2004 for Sarah Brightman to release a live record. THE HAREM WORLD TOUR: LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS is the recorded version of a popular PBS special that presents a performance of one of Brightman's most elaborate tours in one of the most lavish cities on the planet. The tour came on the heels of her 12th record, HAREM, a Middle Eastern-flavored affair. Brightman's always been one to experiment, as evidenced by the incredible variety in the song selection. Of course, she does a powerful rendition of a medley of songs from Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THEOPERA, in which she starred. However, she also adds her own touch to everything from compositions by Dvorak to such rock classics as Kansas's "Dust in the Wind" and Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale." Predictably, the atmosphere is charged with the overwhelming energy of a performer who has lived on stage for most of her life, and THE HAREM WORLD TOUR marks her long overdue live debut on CD. Process Of Belief, The
Bad Religion: Greg Graffin (vocals); Brett Gurewitz (guitar, background vocals); Brian Baker, Greg Hetson (guitar); Jay Bentley (bass, background vocals); Brooks Wackerman (drums). Producers: Greg Graffin, Brett Gurewitz. Recorded at Sound City and West Beach, Los Angeles, California. Bad Religion has been the iron man of Southern California hardcore punk for more than two decades. The core of the group, founded in the San Fernando Valley in 1980 by teenagers Brett Gurewitz (guitarist), Greg Graffin (vocalist) and Jay Bentley (bassist), arereunited on their twelfth album, THE PROCESS OF BELIEF. Gurewitz rejoined the band for a second time in 2001 to record 14 blasts of melodic punk that take off with the hyperdrive rocker "Supersonic," in which Graffin yearns to live "decently, meaningfully" over double-time drums and buzzing guitars. The album is a return to form for the group, mixing pop-inflected hard rock songs about alienated, throwaway teens ("Broken") with intricately worded, mile-a-minute rants like "Materialist," which slams dollar-chasers obsessed with "nonsense and incipient senescence." Its Graffin and Guerwitz's erudite songwriting that elevates their sometimes by-the-numbers punk over that of contemporaries 20 years their junior. Whether ranting about environmental issues ("Kyoto Now"), crooning over a punkabilly swing tune describing the fractured relationship between a father and son ("Sorrow"), or bemoaning the modern culture of surveillance in the straight-up pop/rocker "The Defense," Bad Religion remains the premier choice for punk rockers who love both Minor Threat and the "The New York Times." Taming The Tiger
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion); Femi Jiya (spoken vocals); Michael Landau (guitar); Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar);Wayne Shorter (saxophone); Larry Klein (bass); Brian Blade (drums). Engineers include: Femi Jiya, Dan Marnien, Tony Phillips. Arguably Mitchell's best studio recording since MINGUS, TAMING THE TIGER picks up where TURBULENT INDIGO left off, but there's a notable progression, both musical and lyrical. The biggest reason may be Mitchell's grasping of the production reins. Gone are the slick excesses of bassist Larry Klein's production. TAMING THE TIGER achieves a unity of vision, a fact that also owes to the arrangements' focus on Mitchell's own guitar and synthesizer work. The recurrent sonic texture here is an almost Zawinul-esque tapestry of electronic sounds; silvery synth and guitar-synth form an attractive latticework over which Mitchell lays her jazzy, unpredictable vocal melodies. Though she's grown a bit crankier as she's gotten older, when she lambasts contemporary pop culture (the title track) and attacks Victorian mores ("Face Lift") she doesn't come off as curmudgeonly as she did on the diatribes of her previous album. There's an airiness and joy to TAMING THE TIGER that had been missing in Mitchell's music for a long time. Even the most cerebral tunes have a winning lightness. SKU: 1005479

Blue Roses From The Moons
Personnel: Nanci Griffith (vocals, acoustic & hi-string guitars); Sonny Curtis (vocals, acoustic guitar, resonator); Darius Rucker (vocals); Doug Lancio (acoustic, electric, baritone & hi-string guitars, acoustic & electric 12-string guitars, resonator, background vocals); Philip Donnelly (electric guitar, background vocals); David Angell, David Davidson (violin); Kristin Wilkinson (viola); Ron De La Vega (cello, upright, electric, fretless & tic-tac basses, background vocals); John Catchings (cello); Jim Williamson (flugelhorn); James Hooker (piano, B-3 organ, synthesizer, background vocals); Joe B. Mauldin (upright bass); Pat McInerney (drums, percussion, train whistle, background vocals); Fran Breen (drums); J.I. Alison (percussion); Lee Satterfield, Le Ann Etheridge (background vocals). Recorded at Woodland Studios and Almo Irving Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes byNanci Griffith. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. On BLUE ROSES FROM THE MOONS, Griffith covers Nick Lowe and Guy Clark, re-visits some of her own best-loved songs, adds a potpourri of new ones, duets with Hootie, and brings in Buddy Holly's old band, the Crickets, to join her own Blue Moon Orchestra on several tracks. Griffith dedicates the album to the Blue Moon Orchestra, with whom she has been playing for a decade, and the whole thing serves as a kind of retrospective of what she and they have been up to all that time; it's a new studio album organized like a live album. The Blue Moon Orchestra is a versatile group, and its gets to show its many faces on these tracks, which range from positively jubilant ("Everything's Comin' Up Roses") to wistful and contemplative ("Wouldn't That Be Fine") to dark and moody (Lowe and Paul Carrack's "Battlefield"). Hootie & The Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker duets with Griffith on a re-make of her "Gulf Coast Highway," a bittersweet tale of devotion and loss. There are many lovely moments on this album, nicely juxtaposed with more energetic tunes, such as the tongue-in-cheek raucousness of the rock classic "I Fought The Law" (written by Cricket guitarist Sonny Curtis, who duets with Griffith on this version) and the honky-tonk spirit of "Maybe Tomorrow."
