Journey Out Of Time, A
Cowboy Nation: Chip Kinman (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Tony Kinman (vocals, guitar, bass); Jamie Spidle (drums, background vocals). Chip and Tony, the Kinman brothers, have fronted many bands since the '70s: the raw, Clash-like punk rock of the Dils; the proto-country-punk hybrid of Rank & File; the quirky, drum machine-based alt-rock Blackbird. Their latest incarnation is Cowboy Nation, a primarily acoustic trio inspired by the pre-Nashville Sound of Western music. The Kinman brothers sing of riding the range, badmen wandering the western frontier, and being on a lonely trail far from home. JOURNEY features immaculately-picked yet rhythmically forceful acoustic guitars, deep, drawling vocals with warm Everly Brothers-style harmony, and simple, understated percussion. This album evokes the camaraderie of people singing for each other around a campfire or on a back porch. SKU: 1042125

Kindred
Personnel: Stefon Harris (vibraphone, marimba); Jacky Terrasson (piano); Tarus Mateen (bass); Terreon Gully, Idris Muhammad (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York On January 10 & 11, 2001.Includes liner notes by Dan Quellette. KINDRED was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual Or Group. This recording date co-led by vibraphonist Stefon Harris and pianist Jacky Terrasson is filled with spirited performances. Interestingly, the concept on KINDRED was to fuse together the improvisational concepts of these two jazz phenoms in a way rarely done in jazz anymore. That said, the solos on KINDRED are structured very differently from other contemporary jazz releases. Straying from the typical "round robin" soloing formula heard on 99 percent of jazz releases, Harris and Terrasson both solo over the same choruses on nearly every track. The two complete each others musical phrases, create dense counterpoints, delve headstrong into call-and-response dialogues, and even enter into some friendly sparring matches. As you might imagine, highlights revolve mostly around the up-tempo burners. Among these, we hear fresh renditions of standards "My Foolish Heart" and "What Is This Thing Called Love." Terrasson's own "Rat Entrance" and "Rat Race" also offer up exciting performances; the latter begins with a humorous nod to the theme song from the THE TWILIGHT ZONE. SKU: 1068062

20000 Watts RSL
Midnight Oil includes: Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, Rob Hirst. Producers include: Midnight Oil, Magoo, Nick Launay, Warne Livesay, Glyn Johns. Includes liner notes by Tim Winton. Since its 1978 debut, Midnight Oil has poured its passion for left-wing causes into an impressive canon that combines intelligent lyrics with hook-laden chorusesand slashing rhythms. 20,000 WATT R.SL. simultaneously looks to the past and forward, including two newer songs from the forthcoming REDNECK WONDERLAND. Though the band's geographical references tend to be Aussie-centric, the injustices the Oils decry, ranging from the mistreatment of native people and culture ("Beds Are Burning") to the greed of corporations ("Blue Sky Mine"), are universal. Guitarists Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey rage throughout with Garrett's voice leading the charge on "Best Of Both Worlds," occasionally slowing up enough to warble on harmonica ("Truganini"). Clinging to the ideological and musical tenets of punk, 20,000 WATT R.S.L. is a primer for the only band that continues to matter in these regards. SKU: 1005953

Tonight [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audiotracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie, Tina Turner, Iggy Pop (vocals); Derek Bramble (guitar, synthesizer, bass); Carlos Alomar (guitar); Guy St. Onge (marimba); Arif Mardin (synthesizer); Carmine Rojas (bass); Omar Hakim (drums); Sammy Figueroa (percussion); Robin Clark, George Simms, Curtis King (background vocals). The Borneo Horns: Lenny Pickett (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Stanley Harrison (alto & tenor saxophones); Steve Elson (baritone saxophone). Producers: David Bowie, Derek Bramble, Hugh Padgham. Recorded at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Canada. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Following the enormous success of the vibrant and upbeat LET'S DANCE, David Bowie's follow-up TONIGHT was a slicker yet more enigmatic-sounding collection. Full of synthesizers and polite Arif Mardin arrangements, this record allowed Bowie to indulge himself, even if that meant not putting out LET'S DANCE II. Three songs were resurrected from the '70s Iggy Pop catalog and another newer one was co-written with Pop ("Dancing With The Big Boys.") A 1977 Pop song was used as the title track, on which Bowie duetted with Tina Turner (who was in the middle of a comeback herself) and turned it into a reggae-flavored love song. Elsewhere, the Thin White Duke paid tribute to the Beach Boys by covering "God Only Knows" and scored a hit with "Blue Jean," which was turned into a then-radical mini-film/music video. SKU: 1025379

Do It Yourself
The Seahorses: Chris Helme (vocals, acoustic guitar); John Squire (guitar); Stuart Fletcher (bass); Andy Watts (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Tony Visconti (Mellotron, tambura, Theremin); Lili Hayden (violin). Recorded at Royaltone Studios, North Hollywood, California. After the long-overdue breakup of The Stone Roses, all eyes were on guitarist John Squire, whom many saw as the driving force behind the band. Squire eventually resurfaced as guitarist with the Seahorses on their debut album, DO IT YOURSELF. Seahorses singer-songwriter Chris Helme is anengaging vocalist, singing with clarity and sincerity (two qualitites not exactly in abundance in The Stone Roses). Bassist Stuart Fletcher and drummer Andy Watts give Squire solid ground to stand upon and plenty of room to work. And work he does, playing off every melodic turn and rhythmic break, filling his compositions with the chiming arpeggios and long, snaking leads which made the Stone Roses legendary. Producer Tony Visconti (Bowie, T-Rex, Thin Lizzy), a distinguished figure in British pop history, brings his own powerful vision to DO IT YOURSELF. He Gives the album a huge, classic-rock sound, but also contributes unusual instrumental touches (Mellotron, tambura, Theremin), as well as some inspired string arrangements. SKU: 1005055

RULE (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Personnel: Ja Rule; Chink Santana, Claudette Ortiz, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, R. Kelly, Ashanti, Trick Daddy, Young Merc, Black Child, Lloyd, Cadillac Tah. Producers: Irv Gotti; Jimi Kendrix; Chink Santana; DJ Twinz; Cool & Dre. Ja Rule possesses one of the most recognizable voices in hip-hop, a resolute growl with plenty of inner fire, and the New York City rapper has used itto great effect since his debut in 1999. He's become the master of matching his borderline-reggae vocals with some of the best performers in the business. With his sixth record, R.U.L.E., he wisely dispenses with his barbs at 50 Cent, which dominated his previous effort, and gets back to focusing on what he does best--balancing gangsta rap with R&B. Rule hits a high note early in the record on "Wonderful," a magnificent duet with another troubled soul, R. Kelly; here Kelly soars, and Ja Rule plays off of his singing to perfection. Ja Rule's loving street anthem "New York" boasts unforgettable beats, surprisingly reflective lyrics, and memorable turns from Fat Joe and Jadakiss. Of course, Rule performs ably on his own, particularly on the title cut and on the imperial nine-minute closing track, "Passion." On R.U.L.E., as always, Ja Rule is totally in command. SKU: 6577596

Gran Turismo
The Cardigans: Nina Persson (vocals); Lasse Johansson (acoustic guitar, keyboards); Peter Svensson (guitar); Magnus Sveningsson (bass); Bengt Lagerberg (drums). Recorded at Country Hell Studios, Svaneholm, Sweden. In 1997, even as "Lovefool" climbed the Adult Contemporary radio-play charts and further sold mainstream Americaon the sound of "Swedish pop," something separated the Cardigans from sugary countrymates such as Roxette and Ace of Base. Yes, they placed their metallic guitars out-front while their colleagues hid behind layers of sequencers, making for a more "alternative" approach to "pop." More defining, though, was the sinister cloud that always hung around their songs, no matter how sunny the delivery and the setting. On GRAN TURISMO, the Cardigans follow this dark muse--which already beckoned them to cover Black Sabbath twice in two records--further incorporating a deeply affected melancholia into their Euro-pop ways. On a bed of lush, melodic keyboards, Nina Persson's light tenor brings an angelic disposition to nearly every word she coos, no matter how pessimistic, while trip-hop beats keep the heartbreak moving forward. More importantly, the dirty squalls and lo-fi drive of Moogs and guitars amidst the band's pristinely produced songs seem deeply infected with the sound of American indie-rock (think Blur aping Pavement). And when this newfound influence collides head-on with the Cardigans' inherent way with a tune, GRAN TURISMO approaches the sublime in ways their previous records didn't. SKU: 1014670

Stripped
Personnel includes: Christina Aguilera (vocals); Alicia Keyes (vocals, various instruments, piano); Lil' Kim, Eve, Redman (rap vocals); Linda Perry (various instruments, guitar, programming); Ramone Stagnaro (acoustic guitar); Glen Ballard (guitar, keyboards); Dave Navarro, Aaron Fishbein, John Goux (guitar); Larry Gold (strings); Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, Bill Reichenbach, Daniel Higgins (horns); Ahmir Thompson, Tarus Mateen, Kameron Houff (drums); Alexandra Brown, Charlean Hines, Alexandra Brown, Maxine Waters-Willard, Toya Smith, Alfie Silas-Durlo (background vocals). Producers include: Rockwilder, Glen Ballard, Alicia Keys, Scott Storch, Linda Perry. "Dirrty" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Although STRIPPED is supposed to refer to Christina Aguilera's emotional rather than physical state, you couldn't tell based on her topless pose on the album cover, where the only nod to discretion is some strategically placed hair. Like Britney before her, Christina yearned to get away from her wholesome pop image. In the process, she hooked up with a wide range of collaborators including hip-hop producers Rockwilder and Scott Storch along with a myriad of guest musicians including Eve, Linda Perry, and Dave Navarro. Despite all the glitter and glam, there's no getting away from the fact that Aguilera's singing ability puts her head and shoulders above her poppy peers. Her rich, throaty style works well on slower numbers like a soaring Alicia Keys collaboration "Impossible," piano-driven nugget "Soar," and the Mariah-like "The Voice Within." Other highlights include the snappy, Lil' Kim hip-hop workout"Can't Hold Us Down," sweeping self-empowering rant "Make Over," and the ribald, jeep-beat crazy joint "Dirrty" featuring Redman. Most revealing (on an emotional level) is "I'm OK," an acoustic guitar-heavy autobiographical remembrance of childhood abuse. Britney Spears may not be quite a woman or a girl, but the newly minted Christina is definitely closer to the former. SKU: 1076803

Pre-bird [Remastered]
Personnel: Charles Mingus (bass); Gunther Schuller (conductor); Lorraine Cusson (vocals); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, flute, bass clarinet); John LaPorta (alto saxophone, clarinet); Yusef Lateef, Joe Farrell (tenor saxophone, flute); Booker Ervin, Bill Barron (tenor saxophone); Danny Bank (baritone saxophone); Marcus Belgrave, Ted Curson, Clark Terry, Hobart Dotson, Richard Williams (trumpet); Slide Hampton, Jimmy Knepper, Eddie Bert, Charles Greenlee (trombone); Don Butterfield (tuba); Robert DiDomenica (flute); Harry Schulman (oboe); Charles McCracken (cello); Paul Bley, Roland Hanna (piano); Dannie Richmond (drums); Max Roach, Sticks Evans, George Scott (percussion). Producer: Leonard Feather. Reissue producer: Ben Young. Recorded at Plaza Sound, New York, New York on May 24 & 25, 1960. Includes liner notes by Brian Priestly, Martin Williams and Leonard Feather. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios). This is part of the Verve Master Edition series. Charles Mingus was and remains one of American music's most colorful figures. A volatile personality, dynamic bandleader, influential composer--Mingus was all these and more. Drawing upon the blues and gospel roots of jazz, Duke Ellington and early 20th century classical music, Mingus' compositions are among the most distinctive and passionate in jazz. PRE-BIRD, recorded in 1960, is a set of music that Mingus composed in the 1940s, before the ascendance of Charlie "Bird" Parker to the jazz pantheon. This collection includes a couple of Ellington covers, and music that sounds like the Duke's influence filtered through Igor Stravinskyand Charles Ives ("Half-Mast Inhibition," "Eclipse"). The tunes surge with emotion and power that will be felt long after the disc ends. Mingus assembled a big band (conducted by Gunther Schuler) to give his early tunes (some previously unrecorded before '60) the vibrancy they deserve--featured players include Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Eric Dolphy, Yusef Lateef (reeds), Clark Terry (trumpet) and Paul Bley (piano). A winner. SKU: 5072253

Pound For Pound
Royal Trux: Neil Haggerty (vocals, guitar); Jennifer Herrema (vocals); Chris Pyle (flute, horn, drums); Dan Brown (bass); Ken Nasta(drums). Recorded at Sound Of Music Studios, Richmond, Virginia from February 6-11, 2000. Includes liner notes by Jim Hayes. If a brief sojourn on a major label and years of toiling at their craft have softened Royal Trux, it has only made POUND FOR POUND infinitely more digestible to mainstream sensibilities than the Trux' debut 12 years ago. Neil Hagerty and Jennifer Herrema's grit-encrusted, Southern-fried rock & roll is not meant for pop radio-accustomed ears. Royal Trux are for lovers of twisted music, people who look for what lurks behind the green door, and, on POUND FOR POUND, Royal Trux's rough-hewn rock reaches a howling apex. Jennifer Herrema's guttural screams and Neil Hagerty's smoother punk combine in dirty perfection in this collection of swirling metallic blues. Of particular note are the howling "Fire Hill," the grainy "Deep Country Sorcerer," and the Isaac Hayes-crossed-with-Afghan Whigs "Small Thief," the closest thing to a pop song here. Royal Trux have in the past professed a desire to emulate the Rolling Stones, and here they do it more through their music than through their former spirit of dark rebellion. SKU: 1033465

Producers: Randy Scruggs, NittyGritty Dirt Band. Recorded at Scruggs Sound Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Jack Hurst. "Roll The Stone Away" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Will The Circle Be Unbroken (Glory, Glory)" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. In 1972, California folk-rockers the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded what today might be regarded as the precursor to the jillion-selling pop-bluegrass crossover phenomenon that was the 2000 soundtrack to O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU. They gathered together with some of America's finest (and oldest) bluegrass, folk, and country musicians for a generational summit/musical history lesson that reached both the country and pop audiences. In 1989, the Dirt band released a well-regarded, similarly constructed second volume, and on the 30th anniversary of Volume One, they have an entirely successful third go at it. The fare on offer is stictly old-timey, as one would expect/hope; even if only a handful of the tunes are strictly traditional, most go back to the glory days of American roots music. Seasoned bluegrass veterans like Doc Watson and Jimmy Martin are on hand to mix up with the Dirt Band as well as more contemporary (but equally tradition-minded) country artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Alison Krauss, and Jerry Douglas. As with the previous volumes, the spontaneous, rough-and-ready production gives an appropriately authentic, back-porch feel to the impressive and generous (28 songs) compendium of great American roots music on offer here. Gone Just Like A Train
Personnel: Bill Frisell (acoustic & electric guitars); Viktor Krauss (bass); Jim Keltner (drums, percussion). Recorded at O'Henry Sound Studios, Burbank, California. Includes liner notes by Bill Frisell. A chance to hear Bill Frisell showing another side of his Western influences and to hear drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Viktor Krauss show a looser, jazzier, more improvised side of their abilities. Music fans know that their favorite players have range and abilities that often go undisplayed, as musicians can frequently get pigeonholed into doing what first made them popular. This record is doubly gratifiying for that reason. All these players are opening themselves up to each other and the listener in a unique way. Frisell plays lots of acoustic guitar here, and he's not exclusively using the language of the postmodern, effects-heavy jazz we love him for. We're seeing the pacing and form of his compositions in a less twisted sonic setting. Frisell also collaborated with artist Jim Woodring on the unique and evocative artwork for this CD, representing "things that are hidden, buried - things you can only see in dreams." SKU: 3101381
