Hot Rats
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar, bass, percussion); Captain Beefheart (vocals); Jean-Luc Ponty, Sugar Cane Harris (violin); Ian Underwood (clarinet, saxophone, piano, organ); Max Bennett, Shuggie Otis (bass); John Guerin, Paul Humphrey, Ron Selico (drums). Engineers include: Dick Kunc, Jack Hunt, Cilff Goldstein. Recorded fromAugust to September 1969. HOT RATS was digitally remixed in 1987. "The Gumbo Variations" has been extended an extra 4 minutes from the original LP version. All of the tracks have been remixed, and in some cases sound quite different. Having temporarily disbanded the Mothers Of Invention, Frank Zappa recorded this exceptional solo album. His group was renowned for musical satire, but here the artist opted to showcase his prowess on guitar. Aside from "Willie The Pimp," which features a cameo vocal by Zapppa's old friend Captain Beefheart, the set is comprised of instrumentals. The players, including Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Ian Underwood, are uniformly excellent, combining to provide a solid jazz-rock platform for Zappa's compulsive soloing. Here the guitarist relishes a freedom which, while acknowledging past achievements, prepares new territories for exploration. As such, HOT RATS was a pivotal release in Zappa's oft-misunderstood career. SKU: 1001830

Great Country Songs [Remastered]
Recorded between July 1, 1954 and October 30, 1976. Includes liner notes by Charles Wolfe. All tracks have been digitally remastered. In this era of MTV and multi-media rock stage shows, it's easy to forget that rock and rollwas originally considered "hillbilly" music. Similarly, it would no doubt surprise many Elvis fans to discover that the king of rock and roll charted on the Billboard country charts--several times--six months before he hit the pop charts with "Heartbreak Hotel." And yet Elvis Presley, the original "Hillbilly Cat," never strayed too far from his country roots, as the 1996 anthology GREAT COUNTRY SONGS demonstrates. This impressive collection includes 24 tracks from throughout Presley's career, from his 1955 country hit "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" to a 1976 cover of Jim Reeves' classic "He'll Have to Go" (which, incidentally, was Elvis' final studio recording). As an inducement to fans that already own most of these recordings, RCA has included five previously unreleased alternate takes amid the more familiar fare. The true value of this package, however, is that it gathers all Presley's most important country recordings on a single disc. As an added bonus, the backing tracks feature great support from such country legends as James Burton, Floyd Cramer, and Chet Atkins. SKU: 1085786

My Everything
Personnel include: Anita Baker (vocals); Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Paul Jackson Jr., Philip Hamilton, Robert Randolph (guitar); Dan Higgins (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Jerry Hey (trumpet); Reggie Young (trombone); Russell Ferrante (piano); Barry J. Eastmond (keyboards); Eric Rehl (synthesizer); Gerald Albright, Jimmy Haslip, Al Turner, Nathan East, Reggie Hamilton, Alex Al, Ron Jenkins (bass guitar); Ricky Lawson, Steve Ferrone, William Kennedy, Bernard Davis (drums); Bashiri Johnson (percussion). Producers: Barry J. Eastmond; Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Recording information: Soup Can Studios, Detroit, Michigan; East Bay Music Studios, Tarrytown, New York; Brandon's Way, Hollywood, California; Record One, Sherman Oaks, California; Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California; Village Recorders, Los Angeles, CA; Le Gonks West, Los Angeles, CA. Anita Baker first garnered a big audience in 1986 with her second record, RAPTURE. A critical favorite with a uniquely raspy, jazz-like expressionistic singing style, she scored a major pop and R&B hit with "Sweet Love." From that initial success,Baker carved her own niche somewhere between deep soul and smooth jazz. After a few more albums she decided to concentrate her passion on her family. Following nearly a decade's hiatus, Baker returns to the recording studio with 2004's MY EVERYTHING, and, happily, very little has changed. She hasn't tinkered one bit with the sound that made her a beloved singer, emerging with a record both comforting and enrapturing. "You're My Everything" contains lyrics straight out of a WWII-era torch song, and a vibe that would have fit snugly on one of her first few outings. Although backed by a driving saxophone on the energetic gospel/blues number "I Can't Sleep," Baker fills much of MY EVERYTHING with sweet love songs. She brings it all together on the closing track, "Men in My Life," a tribute to her husband and two young boys. SKU: 6572550

Shine
Personnel includes: Daniel Lanois, Bono, BrianBlade, Daryl Johnson, Aaron Embry, Chris Thomas, Malcolm Burn, Brady Blade, Tony Mangurian, Emmylou Harris. Coming a full 10 years after Daniel Lanois' last solo album, SHINE in many ways picks up exactly where FOR THE BEAUTY OF WYNONA left off. Actually, it sounds like that album's low-key atmospherics married to the superstar cameos of Lanois' debut, ACADIE. Emmylou Harris contributes vocals to the almost-spiritual opener, "I Love You," while Bono co-writes and sings the admittedly U2-like "Falling At Your Feet." The star-cameo trend takes a strange turn on "As Tears Go By" (not the Stones song), which is built, Moby-like, around a sampled steel guitar line by the late blues pioneer Charley Patton. After that opening trio of guest star showcases, SHINE calms down a bit and slips into a typically loose, vaguely mysterious groove powered by Lanois and his longtime collaborator Malcolm Burn's twangy guitars and ghostly keyboards. Nearly a third of the 13 songs are instrumentals, with the spooky "Transmitter" and the simply gorgeous, pedal-steel-driven closer "JJ Leaves LA" among the album's highlights. Of the vocal songs, the peak is the hymn-like "Slow Giving," on which the album's spiritual preoccupations coalesce into something genuinely grand and powerful. SKU: 1081465

Dressed To Kill
Kiss: Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums). Recorded at Electric Lady Studio, New York, New York. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio at Sterling Sound, NYC. By 1975, Kiss' songs of sex, fun and rock and and roll had gained the band a loyal following thirsting for more. With their third album, Kiss did not disappoint. The ribald and rollicking "Room Service" kicks things off with a nudge and a wink; it's about getting more than justfresh towels from the front desk. The rest of DRESSED TO KILL continues down that road, whether it's Gene Simmons singing of "moving down the line/the ladies are all looking fine" or Paul Stanley describing a tryst with an exotic dancer who spotted his picture in a magazine. While his bandmates naughtily sang of the fairer sex, Ace Frehley was inspiring legions of fledgling guitarists. Two songs on DRESSED TO KILL come closest to showing why Kiss meant so much to teenagers. Frehley strikes a chord with "Getaway," a fantasy about trying to escape despite being flat broke. And the great rock anthem "Rock And Roll All Nite" is pure fulfillment--this was the exact destination their fans were trying to escape to. Re-released in a live version only months later, "Rock And Roll All Nite" became Kiss' first top-40 single, providing the springboard to the enormous success awaiting them in the following two years. Chronic 2001, The (UK Version) [ECD]
Personnel: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Hittman, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, King T, Sticky Fingas, Ms. Roq, RBX, DeFari, Xzibit, Knoc-Turn'al, Six-Two, Eddie Griffin, MC Ren, Kokane, Rell,Traci Nelson, Jake Steed, Time Bomb, Devin AKA The Dude, Mary J. Blige, Tray-Dee (vocals); Aaron Harris, Laylow (various instruments); Sean Cruise (guitar); Carl Breeding, Scott Stocrch, Finesse, Camara Kambon (keyboards); Mel-Man, Mike Elizondo, Colin Wolfe (bass); Taku Hirano (percussion); DJ Pen (scratches); Koka, T.Y. Nichols (background vocals). Engineers include: Ted Reiger, Steve Macauley, Alex Sinn. "Still D.R.E." was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By Duo Or Group. "Forgot About Dre" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. DR. DRE 2001 was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "The Next Episode" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. With 2001, Dr. Dre has managed to do the seemingly impossible: resurface yet again after a five-year disappearance from the rap game, and shatter all expectations. The first two tracks lull the listener into thinking this is going to be a mellow, G-funk outing, but when the piano loop and beat commence in "Still D.R.E.," it's obvious Dre is still light years ahead of the rest. The seemingly disparate styles of guest artists MC Ren, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem are all unified by Dre's singular musical vision. What makes this record stand out from any other gangsta rap recording before it, however, are the flashes of brutal honesty that pepper the lyrics ("What's the Difference"). Something about Dre's persona and delivery softens his often misogynistic, violent lyrical content. It's as if the audience understands he's only posturing and knows that, deep down, he is a dedicated family man (something he proudly admits). Other standouts on this highly impressive return to the spotlight include "F*** You," "Big Ego's," and the self-explanatory "Still D.R.E." SKU: 1044701

Greatest Hits
Producer: Frankie Beverly Compilation Producer: Tom Cartwright. Liner Note Author: Gail Mitchell. Representative of the transition between late-1970s funk and the smooth R&B that came to dominate '80s pop radio, Frankie Beverly's Maze is rightfully recognized as an important band inthe genre. This 2004 compilation brings together 18 of Maze's finest moments, ranging from 1979's bass-popping jam "Workin' Together" to the silky, Quiet Storm vibe of 1993's "The Morning After." In between is more than a decade's worth of accessible soul, including lock-step funk ("Running Away"), slow-pulse love balladry ("Never Let You Down"), and lounge-ready mid-tempo grooves ("We Are One"). Leader, songwriter, and singer Frankie Beverly is the focus here, and his smooth-as-butter croon, complete with emotive R&B embellishments, shines throughout. Though influenced by such '70s acts as Funkadelic, Smokey Robinson, and Marvin Gaye (Gaye, incidentally, helped Maze get its professional start), the music of Beverly and company is undeniably '80s, dominated by synthesizer, polished production, and a post-disco dance sensibility (as on the strong cut "Back in Stride"). The two live tracks--the audience-participation number "Joy & Pain," and "Happy Feelin's," the band's signature tune--are a bonus to this definitive greatest-hits package. SKU: 6572343

(programming); The Icelandic String Octet. Producers: Bjork, Mark Bell, GuySigsworth, Howie B. HOMOGENIC was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Bachelorette was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. As one of modern music's most enigmatic and consistently entertaining personalities, Bjork has never shied away from the edge. Whether making straight ahead dance music, exploratory modern rock, or even show-tune-caliber drama, her vision has always remained innovative and original. Her voice jumps, in the space of a syllable, from a kitten-like purr to a banshee's howl, and is never anything less than captivating. HOMOGENIC, her latest musical endeavor, finds her plunging headlong into electronica, a form well-suited to her intense, offbeat phrasing and tone. From the skittering breakbeats and ghostly wails of the opening "Hunter" to the all-out electronic crash that is "Pluto," HOMOGENIC explores the melding of human and machine. The drama of "Bachlorette" finds a lush, rich string section following a tripping electronic beat, giving way to the Icelandic wonder's trademark wail. The juxtaposition of thoroughly modern sounds with conventional elements, such as symphonic arrangements, pipe organ, and accordion, form a central theme, to which HOMOGENIC's title undoubtedly refers. On HOMOGENIC, the traditional and the technological find their meeting point in Bjork's soaring, otherworldly voice. SKU: 1011654

Southside [PA]
Personnel include: Lloyd (vocals); Ashanti, Taniya Walter (vocals); Lil Wayne, Scarface (rap vocals); Chink Santana (various instruments). Producers: Corron Cole; Wirlie Morris; Chink Santana; Jimi Kendrix; Irv Gotti. Recording information: Crack House, New York, NY; Take Note, Atlanta, Georgia; Darp Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; House Of Blues, Memphis, TN. R&B crooner Lloyd began his career at ayoung age as one-fourth of N-Toon, a pre-teen vocal group that became popular on the Disney Channel. That future arrived for the Atlanta singer in a most powerful way with his debut, SOUTHSIDE. Signed to Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. label, the 18-year-old Lloyd smoothly works his way through hip-hop-infused songs of seduction. The album's title track (and lead single) finds Lloyd paired with the sultry Ashanti on a serenely soft ballad that includes a touch of vocoder. Lloyd shows that his youth should not be mistaken for ignorance on a deft interpolation of Slick Rick's classic "Hey Young World," here titled "Hey Young Girl." And on "Sweet Dreams," Lloyd coyly and expertly mixes the innocence of nursery rhymes with darker passions. This duality defines Lloyd and makes his debut an intriguing listen. SKU: 6580899

Powertrip
Monster Magnet: Dave Wyndorf (vocals, guitar); Ed Mundel (guitar); Joe Calandria (bass); Jon Kleiman (drums). Additional personnel: Phil Caivano, John Flannery, Matt Hyde (guitar); Scott Garret (drums). Following 1995's DOPES TO INFINITY, which contained the successful single "Negasonic Teenage Warhead", Monster Magnet is back with a vengeance. POWERTRIP is a phat, funky, heavy, danceable record that assaults the senses. These guys rock, but with a flair and excitement that incorporates some other musical styles as well. Monster Magnet are a metal band for the 90's--plenty of thunderous riffage, accented by various other elements thrown into the mix. While POWERTRIP's first two tracks, "Crop Circle" and the title cut, are straight ahead heavy tunes, "Space Lord" ventures into some funky territory. With an acoustic intro, the track is reminiscent of early Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Mindfunk. "Temple Of Your Dreams" has a great dance groove and "19 Witches" has a Pulp Fictionish surf guitar feel to it. "See You In Hell" is straightforward rock with some keyboards thrown in, while "Tractor" goes the punk route. POWERTRIP, while definitely a heavy album, provides enough different styles to appeal to fans of any ofthe above mentioned genres. All in all, Monster Magnet goes outside the boundaries of traditional metal to produce a record of groove-laden depth. SKU: 1005884

Beach Boys Classics, The (Selected By Brian Wilsom)
The Beach Boys includes: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Dennis Wilson, Bruce Johnston. Recorded between 1963 & 2002. Includes song commentary by Brian Wilson. CLASSICS is a wonderful collection of hand-picked standards chosen by Brian Wilson himself, the band's visionary singer-songwriter, and it features his own track-by-track annotations. Eschewing simpler early hits like "Surfin' U.S.A." and "409," the maestro instead goes mostly for more complex fare like the landmark "Good Vibrations," early-1970s nugget "Sail On Sailor," and the underrated SMILE-era "Heroes & Villains." Things kick off tellingly withthe portentous "Surfer Girl," perhaps the exact transition point between the band's sun-and-fun period and a deeper, more emotionally substantive vision. In Wilson's notes we learn that "The Warmth of the Sun" was written for JFK on the date of his assassination and "California Girls" is Wilson's favorite song. Otherwise, the songs speak for themselves, whether it's the isolation reverberating through "In My Room" or the lighthearted swagger imbuing "I Get Around." Equally impressive is the newly recorded "California Feelin'," a song packed with gorgeous harmonies and an irresistible melody that Wilson initially wrote back in the '70s and recorded specifically for this collection in 2002. Spirit Of Eden [Remastered]
Talk Talk includes: Mark Hollis (vocals, guitar, piano, organ); Tim Friese-Greene (guitar, piano, harmonium, organ); Robbie McIntosh (12-string guitar, dobro); Mark Feltham (harmonica); Henry Lowthar (trumpet); Paul Webb (electric bass); Lee Harris (drums); Martin Ditcham (percussion). Additionalpersonnel includes: Choir Of Chelmsford. As the album opens, you almost think that you have put on a Miles Davis album by mistake. The strains of trumpeter Henry Lowther are certainly convincing. Mark Hollis and his band moved on from the New Romantic tag and certainly produced a much more varied and ambitious album. 'The Rainbow' is a startling opener, and after Lowther's trumpet solo is a spooky harmonica solo from ex-Nine Below Zero ace, Mark Feltham. Other cameos convince the listener that Talk Talk have grown. The choice of musicians such as Nigel Kennedy, and the marvellous string bassist Danny Thompson, can do nothing but enhance their reputation. The City of Chelmsford choir are the icing on the cake. Calypso Is Like So
Includes liner notes by Nick Tosches. If there was ever a celebrity whose reputation as one of Hollywood's hippest cats was solid enough that they could risk ridicule by adopting a faux-Trinidadian accent for a novelty record, it was Robert Mitchum. The result is CALYPSO IS LIKE SOa, a collection of 12 Trinidadian tunes, some already made famous by Harry Belafonte, as well as some less well-known songs brought to the studio by Mitchum. Also included on the reissue of CALYPSO IS LIKE SOa are "The Ballad of Thunder Road," the theme from the Mitchum flick, and its B-side, "My Honey's Lovin' Arms." Mitchum retains a dignified cool throughout the album, despite the kitsch subject matter of songs such as "Mama, Looka Boo-Boo," and "I Learn a Merengue, Mama." The album is equal parts Beat and Belafonte. In true Mitchum style, there is also a fair amount of risque material here, and this raunchy edge isperhaps what gives CALYPSO IS LIKE SOa its staying power. SKU: 1081562

Live Bootleg
LIVE! BOOTLEG has been digitally remastered using Sony's 20-Bit Digital Super Bit Mapping process. This release includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos and artwork. Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, piano); Joe Perry, Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums). Additional personnel: David Woodford (saxophone); Mark Radice (keyboards, background vocals). Engineers: Lee DeCarlo, Jack Douglas, Jay Messina. Recorded live between 1973 and 1978. In addition to being one of the greatest American hard rock bands of the '70s (Kiss being the other one), Aerosmith developed a reputation as one of the fiercest live acts thanks to a grueling tour schedule. Inspired by the countless unauthorized live recordings circulating at the time, the band put out LIVE: BOOTLEG, a collection of performances recorded between 1977 and 1978, in addition to a pair of early cuts from a 1973 WBCN simulcast. Unlike many live albums that of this time period that were overdubbed and doctored, BOOTLEG is Aerosmith at its rawest. "Back in the Saddle" and "Toys in the Attic" contain plenty of ragged guitar playing. Despite the sub-par sound quality, the tracks triumph nonetheless thanks to the primal vibe generated by the band's chemistry. Yes, hits like "Walk This Way" and "Dream On" are included, but the true gems are oft-overlooked nuggets like "Chip Away the Stone," "Mama Kin," and an uncredited "Draw the Line" that overflow with Aerosmith's trademark sass and attitude. James Brown's "Mother Popcorn" and the blues classic "I Ain't Got You" (originally doneby the Yardbirds), not only show the band's range, but its love of black music. SKU: 5037866

B2K
B2K: Lil Fizz, Omarion, J-Boog, Raz-B. Producers include: The Underdogs, Troy Taylor, Charles Farrar, Platinum Status, Jermaine Dupri. Now these guys are smooth. Though the four lads who make up B2K may not look old enough to shave, they've already got their mack daddy rap down cold, and for a romanticR&B group, that's a crucial point. From a purely sonic viewpoint, they set the stage for seduction perfectly with rhythms that strike just the right balance between sensuality and gentle prodding, and lush, sparkling guitar and keyboard splashes. Thematically, they really bring the game home; letting girls know what they need on "Understanding," letting them know that B2K knows what women want on "Gots Ta Be," and even going so far as to include such ultra-confident fare as the very self-explanatory "B2K is Hot." Did we mention that the band's official website is called B2Klovesyou.com? Parents, lock up your daughters, B2K has arrived. SKU: 1073687

Once I Was
Personnel: Tim Buckley (vocals, guitar); Lee Underwood (guitar, background vocals); Charlie Whitney (guitar); David Friedman (vibraphone); Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen (acoustic bass); Tim Hinkley (bass); Ian Wallace (drums); Carter C.C. Collins (bongos). Recorded on April 2, 1968 and May 21, 1974 and live in Copenhagen, Denmark on December 10, 1968. Includes liner notes by Sedania Eddi Reader. Digitally remastered by Ben Schultz and Llew Llewellyn (Barefoot Studios). Several posthumous live Tim Buckley recordings have been released, some with overlapping material, so navigation can be a daunting task. For the record, ONCE I WAS consists of five tunes previously included on THE PEEL SESSIONS (now out of print), one available as an import on THE COPENHAGEN TAPES, and two 1974 cuts never before released. The latter feature Buckley in his late-period, rockedup mode, moving through a Fred Neil chestnut and a lusty original composition. The meat of the album is the BBC cuts, which capture Buckley in a transitional period, not quite exited from his folk troubadour mode, and just about to burst into the jazz-folk glory of HAPPY SAD. The concluding Copenhagen selection, "I Don't Need It to Rain," finds Buckley letting loose his voice in jazzy/funky flights of sheer musical joy over a loose groove, and it's here that he seems the most comfortable and unselfconscious.
