Thin Lizzy: Phil Lynott (vocals, bass); Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson (guitar); Brian Downey (drums). Thin Lizzy were not true heavy metal perpetrators; more accurately, out-and-out rockers with a feeling for pop. The late Phil Lynott has a growing core of younger fans, as word is passed down that even though he had his demons he was an outstanding performer. This is their best studio album and it contains two classics; "The Boys AreBack In Town" and the title track. Both spit and crackle, bass and lead guitar burst out of the speaker at loud volume, and throughout, the gentle, laconic voice of Lynott delivers his poetry. Don't allow his death to see Thin Lizzy fade from the memory. SKU: 1001171

Pori
Circle includes: T. Flo (vocals, guitar); J. Lehtsalo (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); T. Niemela (keyboards, Chapman stick); T. Harrivaara (acoustic & electric basses); J. Peltomaki (drums); V. Raitio (percussion). Additional personnel includes: M. Vahakyla (violin); M. Pakkanen (cello); T. Huunonen (flute); A. Kauppila (saxophone); H. Vilianen, E. Innola (background vocals). This is the sixth album from Finland's finest progressive outfit. Its experimental piano, string and flute arrangements recall both avant-garde classical and 1970s prog rock. The six core members imply vague, but poetic references to their Pori, Finland homeland. At times affecting Tortoise's jazzy post rock, at others obviously drawing influences from musique concrete, PORI hides under no guise of pretense. It's a jam album, with no (decipherable) words, whose songs meld together into more of an entire piece than a recording of individual songs. "Vesitorni/kaupunginsairaala," the second song on the album breaks into a synthesizer melody, born from progressive rock. Fueled by clocking percussion and dissolvingguitar lines, its tunes are reminiscent of Kraftwerk. "Back to Pori" and "Kartano" reveal synthesizer washes and circular guitar reverberations underneath a throaty chorus. The odd, minimal organic noises that give this release its musique concrete moniker always seem to weave their way in through violin arias, keyboards, or vocal epithets. Like the landscape of its homeland, PORI is bleak but oddly interesting. SKU: 1068097

Ice Caps - Peaks Of Telluride
Personnel: Sam Bush (vocals, electric guitar, acoustic & electric mandolins, fiddle); Jon Randall (vocals, guitar); Jeffro Beck (vocals, electric mandolin); John Cowan (vocals, bass); Dan Sadowski, Pastor Mustard (spoken vocals); Darrell Scott (guitar); Bela Fleck (banjo); Jerry Douglas (lap steel guitar, dobro); John Magnie (accordion); Larry Atamunik (drums). Engineers include: Kooster McAllister, David Sinko. Recorded at Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telludire, Colorado between June 1992 & June 1999. Includes liner notes by Dan Sadowski and Pastor Mustard. If bluegrass is folk music on steroids, then ICE CAPS: PEAKS OF TELLURIDE is bluegrass on rocket fuel and kickapoo joy juice. Nashville mandolin ace Sam Bush is joined by other legendary pickers on this set of performances culled from 25 years of concerts at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Bob Dylan's "Girl From the North Country," a bluegrass favorite, is offered as a joyous, strumabilly romp. Bush tosses off the vocals in his fine, reedy tenor, then engages dobro master Jerry Douglas in a thrilling exchange of solos. Bush shows off his award winning fiddle chops, leading banjoist Bela Fleck, Douglas, and others on an incendiary stomp through "Big Mon," the Bill Monroe standard. This is fun music, and the crowd hollers itself hoarse with approval on Bush's hit "Same Ol' River," John Hiatt's "Memphis in the Meantime," and even a surprisingly apt reading of Kool And The Gang's "Celebrate." Bluegrass purists may look askance, but the virtuosity and huge good time captured here make this collection ideal for all lovers of rocking acoustic music. SKU: 1046399

Art Of Romance, The
Personnel: Tony Bennett (vocals); Gray Sargent (guitar); Phil Woods (saxophone); Lee Musiker (piano); Clayton Cameron (drums); Candido Camero (congas). Recording information: Bennett Studios, Englewood, New Jersey. Arrangers: Jorge Calandrelli; Lee Musiker; Johnny Mandel. Few singers embody the essence of swing and gentility like Tony Bennett. On this 2004 release, produced by the famed Phil Ramone, Bennett teams up with music director and pianist Lee Musiker, and together they create an album that nimbly revolves around themes of love. Rich orchestral arrangements by Johnny Mandel, Musiker, and others augment Bennett's quartet. Made upof mostly dreamy ballads and light, mid-tempo pieces, THE ART OF ROMANCE focuses on stellar standards and other lesser-known tunes that speak of love's rapture and its loss. The charmingly sentimental songs "I Remember You" and "Don't Like Goodbyes" are poignant works that reinforce Bennett's ability (at age 78) to really get inside of a lyric and make it his own. Each heartrending piece on this record sees Bennett crooning over lush, legato strings, gentle piano musings, and whispery brushwork. "Being Alive" is one exception; this tune explodes into a rollicking jazz samba and highlights not only drummer Clayton Cameron, but also conga player Candido Camero and the bebop stylings of alto saxophonist Phil Woods. First Rays Of The New Rising Sun
Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, piano); Ken Pine (12-string guitar); Paul Caruso (harmonica); Stephen Stills (piano); Buzzy Linhart (vibraphone); Billy Cox (bass); Buddy Miles (drums, background vocals); Jimmy Mayes,Mitch Mitchell (drums); Billy Armstrong, Juma Sultan (percussion); Arthur Allen, Albert Allen, Billy Cox, The Ronettes, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood (background vocals). Producers: Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John Jansen, Mitch Mitchell. Engineers: Eddie Kramer, Bob Hughes, Bob Cotto. Recorded between March 1968 and August 1970. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. After years of legal wrangling, FIRST RAYS is the initial album released under the direct supervision of the Hendrix family. These remastered classics, previously found on the posthumous albums THE CRY OF LOVE, WAR HEROES and RAINBOW BRIDGE, were originally slated to be part of a double-album sequel to ELECTRIC LADYLAND, a concept that died with Hendrix in 1970. The compilation of these songs allows us to see the many sides of this innovative artist. Alongside runaway flights of fancy ("Stepping Stone") and overcharged rock/funk explosions ("Room Full Of Mirrors") are beautiful ballads ("Angel") and rollicking numbers that point to a Bob Dylan influence ("My Friend"). Famous friends dot the sonic landscape (Steve Winwood and Chris Wood on "Ezy Rider" and The Ronettes on "Earth Blues"), but Hendrix remains the center of a musical universe whose light was snuffed out far too soon. 16 Lovers Lane [ECD]
The Go-Betweens: Amanda Brown (vocals, guitar, violin, oboe); Robert Forster (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Grant McLennan (vocals, guitar); John Willsteed (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, bass); Lindy Morrison (drums). Recorded at Studio 301, Sydney, Australia in May 1988. The sixth Go-Betweens record (and their last before a 12-year hiatus), 16 LOVERS LANE, is not only one of the band'sfinest albums, it's a remarkable collection of love songs. Focusing on the bittersweet side of romance, vocalist/guitarists Grant McLennan and Robert Forster write with a clear-eyed, unflinching intensity that draws listeners into their narratives of loss and redemption. Moving back to their native Australia, the group abandoned a short-lived experiment with programming and synthesizers begun on their previous album, and returned to a more organic sound that, accompanied by crisp production, gives this outing a bracing, undated immediacy. Everything here is a gem (including the supremely catchy near-hit "Streets of Your Town"), but perhaps shining most brightly are "Love Is a Sign" and "Dive for Your Memory." The first features Amanda Brown's violin intertwining with chiming guitars as Forster's lyrics depict the vapor trail of a collapsing long-distance relationship. The second, a tale of poignant longing, has harmonized vocals and a mournful oboe coloring the spare, largely acoustic arrangement. One of pop music's masterpieces, 16 LOVERS LANE is a record that people with even a passing interest in the form owe it to themselves to own. SKU: 6565626

Moon Germs [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Joe Farrell (soprano saxophone, flute); Hubert Laws (flute); Walter Kane, Jane Taylor, Wally Kane (bassoon); Ron Carter (cello, bass); David Friedman (vibraphone, percussion); Bob James (piano, electric piano, harpsichord); Gene Bertoncini, Stuart Scharf (guitar); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Jerry Rappaport. Recorded on November 21, 1972. Originally released on CTI Records. Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though mult-reed player Joe Farrell is best known for playing on the first two Return to Forever albums, the numerous records he released under his own name are just as worthy ofinterest. Making the journey from bop to funky, fusion-tinged workouts, Farrell found a comfortable home in the '70s at CTI Records. 1973's MOON GERMS can be seen as something of a transitional point for Farrell, as it points towards the full-on funk/fusion direction he would take on the follow-up CANNED FUNK. In fact, the opening cut "Great Gorge" starts out with a young Stanley Clarke (another RTF member) and Jack DeJohnette laying down a heavy funk groove before the dynamic shifts to swirling post-bop mayhem, working up to a kaleidoscopic electric piano solo from Herbie Hancock. Through the rest of the album, the quartet teeters on the verge of fusion and soul-jazz, Farrell tempering the electric free-for-alls with lyrical soprano sax and flute, but it was plain that this was a band in full flight with places to go that hadn't even been invented yet. Rip The Jacker [PA]
Canibus: Germaine Williams (rap vocals). Canibus is back in furious form with this hard-hitting release. On "Genabis," the rapper known to his mama as Germaine Williams launches his verbal assault over an eerie gothic soundtrack. "Levitibus" follows with a battery of samples and a surprisingly smooth accordion track. The inventively sampled soundscapes continue throughout the album, with the exotic "M-Sea-Cresy," the reggae-tinged "No Return," and the Mariachi-on-helium "Indibisible." A smart, eclectic album, RIP THE JACKER goes so far as to sample UK trip-hoppers Portishead and roots itself in scientific references and a quest for knowledge. Although he's been serving his countryin the military, Canibus has obviously been busy in the studio, as this fierce record reveals. SKU: 1085906

Very Best Of Marvin Gaye, The [Digipak]
Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Kim Weston (vocals); The Vandellas (background vocals). Producers include: Smokey Robinson, Ashford & Simpson, Ivy Jo Hunter, Norman Whitfield, Harvey Fuqua. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. This generous two-disc compilation does an excellent job of tracing soul legend Marvin Gaye's career. It moves from his earliest, most pop-oriented recordings ("How Sweet It Is," "I'll Be Doggone") to his famed duets with Tammi Terrell ("Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing") and his later, more socially conscious work from the WHAT'S GOING ON era. Things kick off marvelously with the vibrant "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," where Marvin works his magic around sassy vocal assists from the Vandellas and a slightly Latin-tinged arrangement sporting flute and cowbell. Other stops along the way include songs from the ultimate make-out album LET'S GET IT ON, the latter-day glory of the subtly sensual "Sexual Healing,"and of course the immortal "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," the scorned-love anthem whose ominous intro alone is enough to secure Mr. Gaye a place in pop heaven. If you're interested in this R&B giant's music but just want one bases-covering collection, this is the definitive release for you. SKU: 1064226

Power Of Soul [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Idris Muhammad (drums); Bob James (arranger, conductor, keyboards); Grover Washington, Jr. (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Joe Beck (guitar); Gary King (bass); Ralph MacDonald (percussion). Producer: Creed Taylor. Reissue producer: Didier C. Deutsch. Recorded in March 1974. Originally released on CTI Records. Includes liner notes by Didier C. Deutsch. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though Idris Muhammad has been widely known as one of the finest jazz drummers since the '60s, he has an equal grounding in pop, funk, and rock. Recording in 1974 for CTI Records offshoot Kudu, he was afforded the perfect opportunity to put his funkier impulses to work. The opening jazz-funk workout, a driving rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Power of Soul" is pushed along by keyboardist Bob James's urgent horn charts, and the licks traded between Grover Washington, Jr. and RandyBrecker on the closing composition "Loran's Dance" make the slow-burning groove come vividly to life. There are a few moments where the production on POWER OF SOUL verges on the overly smooth, but its nevertheless instructive to note that future lite jazz doyens like James and Washington once had a fair amount of grit in their systems. Uncle Tupelo 1989-1993 (An Anthology)
Uncle Tupelo: Jay Farrar (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Jeff Tweedy (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass); Max Johnson (steel guitar, banjo); Andy Carlson (violin); John Stirratt (bass); Mike Heidorn (drums, cymbals); Ken Coomer (drums). Producers include: Paul O. Kolderie, Sean Slade, Matt Allsion, Nicholas Hill, Brian Paulson. Compilation producers: Darren Salmieri, Bob Irwin. Engineers include: Paul O. Kolderie, Sean Slade, Brian Redman. Includes liner notes by Anthony DeCurtis & Tony Margherita. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York. For those whose memory may not extend beyond the last Ryan Adams record, alt-country as we know it today pretty much started with Uncle Tupelo. In the 21st century they may best known for giving birth to Wilco and Son Volt, but in those halcyon days whose span is indicated by this anthology's title, Uncle Tupelo were premier roots-rockers combining country influences with the indie-rock sounds of the day (Husker Du, the Replacements, you know the drill). The key here is that we're talking alt-country, not country rock. In other words, the punk influence manifest in this 21-song collection was what helped Tupelo (and all their subsequent disciples) set themselves apart from the laid-back country-rock sounds of the '70s, even if Gram Parsons was asbig an inspiration to UT as the Minutemen. Uncle Tupelo weren't around long enough to amass much of a discography, so this generous collection is an excellent and definitive place to start learning about them, and by extension, about the roots of modern-day alternative country (-rock). Electro Shock Blues
Eels: E (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards); Butch (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Grant Lee Phillips (electric guitar, banjo, background vocals); Stuart Wylen (guitar, alto & bass flutes, Fender Rhodes); Parthenon Huxley (guitar); Lisa Germano (violin); Cynthia Merrill (cello); Jim Jacobsen (clarinet, keyboards, bass); Bill Liston (saxophone); Jon Brion (organ, Chamberlin); John Leftwich (acoustic bass); T-Bone Burnett (bass). Producers: E., Jim Jacobsen, Mickey P., Michael Simpson, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Engineers include: Mickey P., E., Jim Jacobsen. ELECTRO-SHOCK BLUES is the ultimate example of artistic-statement-as-therapy-session. Written and recorded in the wake of the death of family and friends, the songs here are full of sorrow and bereavement, butredeemed by a self-conscious sense of black humor. The man formerly known as "E" is first and foremost a popster though, so no matter how downhearted things get (and with song titles like "Going to Your Funeral" and "The Medication is Wearing Off," this is no day at the beach) there are enough hooks to keep it all afloat. There's a sparseness to the arrangements that suits the stark nature of the subject matter, but the intimacy thus created allows ELECTRO-SHOCK BLUES to communicate that much more directly. Check your razor blades at the door. SKU: 1000446
