Blues, The
Personnel includes: Nina Simone (vocals, piano); Buddy Lucas (tenor saxophone, harmonica); Irvin Markowitz (trumpet); Mel Tax, Jerome Richardson (flute); Ernest Hayes (organ); Rudy Stevenson, Eric Gale, Al Shackman (guitar); Bob Bushnell, Calvin Taylor (bass); Bernard Purdie (drums); Gordon Powell (percussion). Recorded between 1966 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Michael Alago. Recorded in the late '60s and early '70s, THE BLUES is sprinkled with both covers and originals, capturing Ms. Simone's moving performances of traditional and folk blues standards. With her far-reaching array of emotions conveyed through low, sweet, long notes, it takes the listener on a journey through pain, joy, love, anger, and humor. Here she performs beautiful renditions of songs made popular by, among others, Bob Dylan and Kurt Weill. On "In the Dark," deeply accenting the harmonica-tinged tune at just the right places, she lustily tells a tale of lovers. Simone's voice carries the listener from the intense passion of love, to sarcasm, to sadness, and anger. "Backlash Blues," a witty tale told with the help of Langston Hughes, is abroad reference to '60s prejudice. The signature Nina Simone tune, "Sugar In My Bowl," is included here, unleashing her amazing vocal range, supported by only by a saxophone and a finger snap or two. Whatever the instrumentation, Simone's sense of drama always shines through. SKU: 1005405

Los Lonely Boys
Three Chicano brothers from Texas--Henry, Jojo, and Ringo Garza--make up the roots rock trio Los Lonely Boys. Touted as "Willie Nelson's favorite local band," the Lonely Boys accordingly spend much of their first album working their own variant on American musical traditions. Their blend of rock, blues, and soul is as full of references to their influences as it is teeming with youthful energy. Henry Garza strikes up an extremely Stevie Ray Vaughan-like guitar tone on the bluesy shuffle of "Crazy Dream" (in fact, Vaughan's keyboardist Reese Wynans is a guest on the album). The lengthy near-instrumental "Onda," with itslyrical-but-biting guitar, Ringo's Latin percussion, and Wynans's rich organ, seems to be an homage to vintage Santana, and the band shows off its vocal harmonies on the old-school soul ballad "More Than Love." If Los Lobos were a couple of decades younger and hailed from Texas instead of California, they might sound quite a bit like Los Lonely Boys. SKU: 6569176

Subject
Personnel includes: Dwele, Slum Village. Producers includes: Dwele, Jake & The Phatman, Ronald Estill, Dwayne Bastiany, Pete Kuzma. Meet the nu-soul--same as the old soul? Well, Dwele's debut certainly contains similarities to old-school artists such as Donny Hathaway and of course Stevie Wonder--all the evidence you need to connect the dots is here in the shimmering Fender Rhodes piano that predominates on SUBJECT. But Dwele is made of more contemporary stuff. He's a rapper who's found his singing voice, though the only time his hip-hop roots really show is in the tumbling lyrics to the coming-of-age song "Twuneanunda" and the title track. Mostly he's a smoothly sophisticated singer with a canny sense of what works in an arrangement, and while he obviously has deep ties to what is now ancient R&B history, his sound is undeniably modern, and irresistibly seductive. Most of the cuts on SUBJECT are down-tempo, though the incidence of satin sheet-oriented boudoir ballads is kept to a surprising minimum. He's a more thoughtful lyricist than that, as evidenced by the nuanced, humorous "Lady at Mahogany," about a tryst gone awry, in which he shows he'snot averse to telling tales on himself. SUBJECT is both light enough in feel and accomplished enough in execution to leave you hungry for more. SKU: 1083599

Seasons In The Abyss
Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Recorded at Hit City West, Hollywood Sound, California and Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. Slayer built a rabid following with faster-than-light thrash metal, eerie, disturbing lyrics, and bassist/singer Tom Araya's screamed vocals. 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD, a blinding metal classic that clocked in at below a half hour in length and was produced by Rick Rubin, put the band on the metal map. Although Slayer was a bunch of longhairs, it wasn't uncommon to see hardcore skinheads slamming away at the band's shows. But 1988's SOUTH OF HEAVEN alienated many of Slayer's punk fans, as the group slowed their speed metal to a Black Sabbath-like crawl. 1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS follows itspredecessor's formula. The album was embraced by metal-heads everywhere, eventually earning Slayer its first gold-certified record. The furious opening "War Ensemble" is a throwback to Slayer's earlier speed metal direction, while the album-closing title track is a murky, swarming chunk of metal. Other standouts include the chilling "Dead Skin Mask," which dealt lyrically with notorious killer Ed Gein, "Blood Red," "Expendable Youth," "Hallowed Point," and "Skeletons of Society." For fans of extreme-metal, it doesn't get any better than Slayer's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS. SKU: 1071393

Take Them On On Your Own
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Peter Hayes, Robert Turner (vocals, guitar, bass); Nick Jago (drums, percussion). On their second album, the perpetually dark-clad Black Rebel Motorcycle Club offers another set of feedback-drenched songs. Though the band still wears its Jesus & Mary Chain influence on its leather sleeves, TAKE THEM ON, ON YOUR OWN reveals a refined sound that hints at other musical forebears. The opening track, "Stop," rocks like a latter-day Oasis tune, while "We're All in Love" is carried along by a slinky Stones-like riff. Although wide-screen, Ride-inspired epics are no longer the order of the day for the brooding lads of BRMC, their renewed focus is evident on TAKE's furiously concise anthems. Just to mix things up a bit, the Rebels add a vaguely political tone to a number of tracks and even bust out the acoustic guitarson "And I'm Aching." In a pleasant surprise, the trio saves some of its finest songs, such as "Suddenly" and "Rise or Fall," for the end, rounding out their solid sophomore outing. SKU: 1085811

Biorhythms
Tokyo-based artist Atau Tanaka was a founding member of Sensorband, an international trio that integrates performance art, biosensory instruments, and improvisation. His solo debut, BIORHYTHMS, extends the Sensorband concept, drawing its sounds and loops from the rhythms of bodily systems. Where Sensorband traffics in minimally refined electronics, the diverse BIORHYTHMS processes pulses and blips into a groovy and exciting sampler of modern electronica modes. "Heart:beat:monitor" and "28:23:33" present the sine-wave electronics that drive BIORHYTHMS, while the heavily coursing noiseof "Arteries:of:Tokyo"--referencing both city traffic and cardiovascular flow--sets the disc's theme. "Delull" introduces techno-styled patterns of bass, drum programming, and even a dollop of melody. The amazing "F:M:R" factors in the pounding beats, Latin polyrhythms, and scything loops of house music. "Adagio" spins ethereal synth chords into infinite strands of Ligeti-like flux, recalling Wolfgang Voigt's Gas compositions. The beat returns on "Otaku," an electro-flavored headphone cybersafari through the claustrophobic, neon-lit streets of downtown Tokyo. "Alias:To the:Nexttime" brings Tanaka's fantastic voyage to a meditative close with stirrings as soft as a cricket's chirr. SKU: 1030496

Salisbury
Personnel: Mick Box (vocals, acoustic guitar, guitar), Ken Hensley (vocals, acoustic & slide guitar, piano, harpsichord, organ, piano, vibraphone); David Byron (vocals); Paul Newton (bass); Keith Baker (drums). Recorded at Landsdowne Studios, London, England in October and November 1970. Includes liner notes by Ken Hensley. With their third release (and second album of 1971), SALISBURY, Uriah Heep issued their first real ambitious work. While their first couple of albums (URIAH HEEP and LOOK AT YOURSELF) were cut from the samemonolithic blues-metal cloth as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, it was with SALISBURY that David Byron and co. let their admiration of progressive rock seep in--most notably on the album closing, over 16-minute title track, which featured a 26-piece orchestra. Elsewhere on the album, the songs are shorter and more conventional, such as the acoustic ballad "Lady in Black" and the jazzy track "The Park." SKU: 1067584

Michael Flatley's Lord Of The Dance
Original score written by Ronan Hardiman. Ronan Hardiman's music to Michael Flatley's extravagant stage production picks up directly where the show's precursor, the equally extravagant "Riverdance,"left off. The sources for Hardiman's score are ancient Irish folk melodies, fervorous, polyrhythmic percussion and modern new-age keyboard textures; they swirl continuously through the music, creating a perfect backdrop for the flexible stomps of the show's dancers. Violins, accordions and bouzoukis fly above massive drum sounds (both acoustic and programmed), emphasizing an interaction of musical heritages. The fact that music with such disparate sources can find overwhelming international success is testament to this show's power and its cultural importance. SKU: 3102786

Old Fangled Tone, The
Williamson is ever the restless musical explorer, and 1999's THE OLD FANGLED TONE captures him in a richly compelling concert performance. In a considerable instrumental departure, Williamson offers gorgeously rendered brass arrangements of a series of traditional songs. This was clearly a labor of love. The horns are, by turns, frolicsome and plaintive, weaving a staggeringly emotive tapestry on such tracks as "Well Ye Go to Flanders." The songs all date from the 1900s or from several centuries prior. While most of the pieces have their origins in the British Isles, the concert repertoire features some notable exceptions. "Battleship of Maine," for example, chronicles the sinking of said ship and President McKinley's formation of the Rough Riders. Throughout the set, Williamson sings, plays guitar or harp, and serves as the affable host, introducing the songs with humor and well-researched depth. The uniqueness of this particular project is not lost on the extremely appreciative audience. The lucky listeners savor every nuance with silent attention and eruptin applause at the conclusion of each number. SKU: 1058774

Never Say Die
NEVER SAY DIE is Black Sabbath's last LP with Ozzy Osbourne. Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). Additional personnel: John Elstar (harmonica); Don Airey (keyboards). Recorded at Sounds Interchange, Toronto, Canada. By the end of the '70s, though Black Sabbath remained a top concert draw, its albums had become increasingly erratic and sub-par when compared to its earlier master works. Singer Ozzy Osbourne's growing disillusionment with the band had reached a boiling point, especially after it took so long to complete 1978's NEVER SAY DIE, the original line-up's final album. Though the album's title might suggest that the band had reconciled its differences (Osbourne had already left the band once previously, only to return shortly afterwards), the turmoil spilled over onto the recording. The album-opening title track remains the record's best-known track, as it was featured on Ozzy's popular 1982 solo live album of Sabbath material, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL. Other hard rockers on the first half of the album, such as "Junior's Eyes" and "A Hard Road" prove to be standouts. The final deciding factor for Ozzy's permanent split from the band occurred on the ensuing tour, when a hungry young bandby the name of Van Halen opened the shows, continually blowing the headlining metal veterans off the stage. Clock Without Hands
This is a Hyper CD which contains regular audio tracks and provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Personnel: Nanci Griffith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Michael Johnson (vocals, classical guitar); Chas Williams (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, dobro); Ray Kennedy (acoustic guitar, Moog synthesizer); John Stewart (acoustic guitar); Pete Kennedy (electric, 12-string, mando & baritone guitars); Clive Gregson, Doug Lancio (electric guitar); Lee Satterfield (classical guitar, background vocals); David Davidson, David Angel (violin); Monisa Angell (viola); Ron De La Varga (cello, bass); John Catchings (cello); Jim Williamson (baritone saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn); James Hooker (keyboards); Pat McInerney (drums, percussion); Le Ann Etheridge, Maura Kennedy, Jennifer Kimball (background vocals). Producers: Ray Kennedy, Nanci Griffith, Peter Collins. Engineers: Ray Kennedy, John Hurley, John Holbrook. CLOCK WITHOUT HANDS is a reflective set, highlighting Nanci Griffith's preoccupations with Vietnam, land mine clearance, and the death of her mother. She continues her habit of writing deceptively simple songs not with an eye to the charts (unusual enough in a major 21st century artist), but in the old-fashioned songwriter's way of telling a story and making a point. A good example is "Truly Something Fine," where Griffith is joined by Linda Ronstadt in a simple, bittersweet love song with a chorus that could have been written anytime in the past hundred years. James Hooker's "Cotton," dripping with Southern atmosphere, is a Stephen Foster/Randy Newman-esque piece about hooking up with an old lover. Griffith's at her best, however, on highly personal ballads such as "LastSong for My Mother," conveying more emotional weight in two minutes and forty seconds than some artists manage over a whole album. Transformer
Personnel: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Mick Ronson (guitar, recorder, piano, background vocals); Ronnie Ross (baritone saxophone); Herbie Flowers (tuba, acoustic & electric basses); Klaus Voorman (bass); John Halzey, Barry Desouza, Ritchie Dharma (drums); David Bowie, The Thunder Thighs (background vocals). Originally released on RCA (4807). Includes liner notes by MIchael Hill. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Having quit the Velvet Underground, a disillusioned Lou Reed came to Britain to rethink his musical career. A low-key solo debut was followed by this highly successful release, which combined the artist's narrative compositions with the lure of contemporaneous fashions, glam-rock and androgyny. Long-time fan David Bowie co-produced the set, which emphasized the commercial nature of Reed's work without sacrificing his individuality or authenticity. Members of Andy Warhol's entourage were describedgraphically in "Walk On The Wild Side" which broke taboos on lyrical content when issued as a single. Its Top 10 place ensured Reed's long-awaited commercial appreciation. SKU: 1077156

Return Of The Regulator 2002, The [PA]
Personnel includes: Warren G(rap vocals, drums); El DeBarge, Ms. Toi, Nate Dogg, Mista Grimm, Soopafly, Butch Cassidy, WC, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Boss Hogg, Damone, Lady Mo, Kokane, George Clinton (vocals); Marlon Williams, Mike Elizondo (guitar); Craig Brockman, Scott Storch, Ron Feemster (keyboards); Andrew Gouche (bass); Melissa, Val Young, Tray Black (background vocals). Producers include: Warren G, Dr. Dre, Soopafly. Engineers include: Booker T. Jones, Warren G, Mauricio "Veto" Iragorri. Recorded at G-Factory and Record One, Los Angeles, California. West Coast rapper Warren G has had mixed luck since "Regulate," his first hit back in 1994, but as this album's title hints, he's back on form here, with a superb mix of romantic rhyming and gangsta rapping. He reunites with original 213 bandmates Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg on the decidedly old-school "Yo' Sassy Ways," while George Clinton makes an appearance on "Speed Dreamin'," a heady mix of P-Funk and West Coast rap. "Young Locs Slow Down" is a warning to would-be gangstas that their lifestyle won't last long, while "It Ain't Nothing Wrong With You," where G's joined by Boss Hogg and Butch Cassidy, is a litany of X-rated romantic conquests. There's a sentimental recollection of his roots on "Ghetto Village," set to the tune of Stevie Wonder's "Village Ghetto Land," while El DeBarge contributes his typically sensual, romantic vocals to the album's final cut, "Keepin' it Strong." De La Soul Is Dead
De La Soul: Posdnuos, Trugoy, Mase. Additional personnel: Q-Tip, Black Sheep, Jungle Brothers. After the peaceful, loving vibes of De La Soul's first album, 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING, nobody expected the harder-edged sound of DE LA SOUL IS DEAD, a paranoid, bitter critique of fans, detractors, and the state of the world. DE LA SOUL IS DEAD deals with the great and small issues in life. On "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa," De La tells the story of the daughter of a successful social worker who is molesting her. They take on fast food customer service in "Bitties in the BK Lounge": "Young girl, won't you take my order? acould be pissed 'cause she's clockin' $2.45 an hour." On the hit "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)," De La tells of being overwhelmed by people trying to use the group to get in the business: "She was screamin' and screamin' and she had the tape in her hand and I knew what she wanteda"The good times aren't totally ignored--the party anthem "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" delivers the good old fashioned De La fun. With DE LA SOUL IS DEAD, the trio graduates from the happy days of the D.A.I.S.Y. age to the harsh truths of reality. SKU: 1086827

Stooges, The
The Stooges: Iggy Stooge (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar); Dave Alexander (bass); Scott Asheton (drums). Additional personnel: John Cale (violin). Includes liner notes by Danny Fields. The Stooges hurled themselves headfirst into 1969 with a debut so sonically ferocious that only one-time Velvet Underground member John Cale could do it justice as a producer. With a full-scale feedback punch, The Stooges' musical bite tore its way towards punk and what would later be called grunge. Fully embracing the idioms of teenage life, THE STOOGES coined previously unmentioned terms of adolescent angst. "No Fun," "Not Right," and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" gave vocabulary to the post-hippie generation yearning to voice its dissatisfaction. Theopening track, "1969," built off the teen-angst of "Summertime Blues" but offered the simplest breakdown of powerlessness to date. "Another year for me and you," says Iggy Stooge, "another year with nothing to do." The Stooges' triumph was in converting the confusion and desires of teenage life into chaotic, three-chord bliss. Often mimicked, but never equalled, THE STOOGES was the call for a new era of rock. SKU: 1005170
