Priceless
Priceless

Personnel: Kelly Price (vocals, arranger); Faith Evans (vocals); Keith Murray (rap vocals); Warryn Campbell (spoken vocals, various instruments); Gorgeous George (spoken vocals); Baby Dubb, Flinstone (various instruments); Bobby Ross Avila (guitar, keyboards); Raphael Saadiq (guitar, bass); Michael Thompson, Nunzio Signore, Eric Clapton (guitar); Byron Sowell, James Wright, Kelvin Wooten (keyboards); Curtis Smith, Ethan Former (bass); Jake & The Phatman (drums); Jason Gaines, Joe Hogue, Iz (programming); The Clark Sisters, Duane Starling (background vocals).
Producers include: Warryn "Baby Dubb" Campbell, Michael Flowers, Stevie J, Kelly Price, Jimmy Jam.
On her fourth album, R&B siren Kelly Price continues to seamlessly meld pop, funk, hip-hop, and R&B. After a brief intro, she comes out swinging with a state-of-things tune ("Someday") that stands as a vow to make one's way against all odds. Shifting to a more romantic perspective, "You Make Me Feel" perfectly captures that start-of-the-affair giddiness, and its popwise melodiousness compares favorably to vintage Chaka Khan. The classic dodge-and-weave batttle of the sexes is given voice as the hip-hop side of things enters the picture on "Take it to the Head," featuring some guest rapping from Keith Murray, who jousts admirably with Price. After several more musical twists and turns, PRICELESS closes out on a spiritual note with the gospel-oriented "You are the Sunshine," whose sunny declarations of faith (with vocal assistance from the Clark sisters) end things on quite the positive note.

Drive You Home Again
Drive You Home Again

Personnel includes: Chris Smither (vocals, guitar).
Producers include: Stephen Bruton.
This is Smither's third album with producer/guitarist Stephen Bruton, who helped put Smither's previously erratic recording career back on trackin 1995 with UP ON THE LOWDOWN. Like that album and its follow-up SMALL REVELATIONS, DRIVE YOU HOME is full of Smither's soulful, weathered baritone, virtuosic folk/blues guitar work and penetrating songwriting, all supported by a tight, sympathetic band. No one's better at bemoaning a lack of love than Smither, as shown on "No Love Today" and the ironic "Get a Better One." As always, he's a master of interpretation as well, covering Tim Hardin's "Don't Make Promises" with a slowed-down, piano-driven arrangement, and investing Danny O'Keefe's rocking "Steel Guitar" with his own stylistic flair.

Personnel: Ron Sexsmith (vocals, guitar); Larry Campbell (pedal steel guitar); Chris Speed (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Josh Roseman (trombone); Bob Stuart (tuba); Sheryl Crow (accordion); Mitchell Froom (keyboards); Kenny Wollesen (vibraphone, marimba); Brad Jones (bass); Greg Cohen (upright bass); Jerry Marrotta (drums, percussion); Don Kerr (drums, background vocals).
Recorded at The Magic Shop, New York, New York andSunset Sound Factory, Los Angeles, California.
On his second album, the Canadian singer-songwriter proves that his stellar debut wasn't just a flash in the pan. Sexsmith is possessed of an eerie, cracked tenor that invests his songs with a quirky kind of innocence. Accordingly, his most obvious influences are man-child pop savants like Brian Wilson and Harry Nilsson who, like Sexsmith, have applied their skewed compositional mastery to songs that express a longing for an unattainable purity.
Mitchell Froom's production is more low-key here than on Sexsmith's debut, and the singer's voice is more fully in command. Whether reveling in a child's naivete about death ("Pretty Little Cemetery") or casting aspersions on his own worldly mask ("Thinly Veiled Disguise"), Sexsmith's assured songcraft and emotional delivery make OTHER SONGS a satisfying experience.

Flux And Mutability
Flux And Mutability

Personnel: David Sylvian (guitar, keyboards); Holger Czukay (guitar, bass, vocals); Michi (voice); Michael Karoli (guitar); Markus Stockhausen (flugelhorn); Jaki Liebezeit (percussion, African flute).
The years following the release of Sylvian's SECRETS OF THE BEEHIVE witnessed a remarkable pair of collaborations with Can's bassist, co-founder, producer, and restless experimenter. Czukay and Sylvian receive sole billing on 1988's FLUX AND MUTABILITY, the second of these sessions, but three core members of the (then disbanded) Can--Czukay, Michael Karoli, and Jaki Liebezeit--contributed to these two exquisite tracks.
FLUX AND MUTABILITY belongs to that rare category of albums--including such masterpieces as Cocteau Twins'VICTORIALAND, Talk Talk's SPIRIT OF EDEN, and Sylvian's own BRILLIANT TREES--whose impossible beauty suggests the likelihood of angelic intervention. The splendid ambient weave of "A Big Bright Colourful World" interlaces Sylvian, Czukay, and Karoli's fragile guitar lines, Czukay's radio and dictaphone samplings, Sylvian's warm, lambent keyboards, Liebezeit's nearly subliminal percussion, the multihued flugelhorn of Markus Stockhausen (yes, Stockhausen fils), and Michi's ephemeral utterances. The music develops and matures in timeless suspension befitting the album's title. "A New Beginning Is in the Offing" features only Sylvian and Liebezeit (on African flute). As mixed by Czukay and Sylvian, the duo's tumbling and unfolding banks of sound conjure open-ended cloudland vistas of the most sublime and celestial aspect.

Trio Vol.2
Trio Vol.2

Full performer name: Dolly Parton/Linda Ronstadt/Emmylou Harris.
I FEEL THE BLUES MOVIN' IN is the second set of previously unreleased Trio recordings that were cut in 1994.
Personnel: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris (vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin); Carl Jackson, Mark Casstevens, John Starling (acoustic guitar); Ben Keith (steel guitar); David Grisman (mandolin); Alison Krauss (fiddle); David Campbell (strings); Robby Buchanan (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Helen Voices (synthesizer); David Lindley (autoharp); Dennis James (glass harmonica); Roy Huskey, Jr. (acoustic & electric basses); Edgar Meyer (acoustic bass); Leland Sklar (bass); Jim Keltner, Larry Atamanuik (drums).
Engineers: George Massenburg, Nathaniel Kunkel.
Recorded at The Site, Marin County, California.
"After The Gold Rush" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. TRIO II was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Album.
Ever since Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt made their Grammy-winning TRIO album in 1987, fans have been clamoring for a sequel. It took twelve years to follow up with Trio II. Harris, Parton and Ronstadt--pop/country queens with three of the most angelic voices ever to grace the airwaves--have been singing together since 1975. Though each has her own distinctive sound, the three blend beautifully.
The material is dizzyingly eclectic, encompassing the old-timey 1934 Carter Family song "Lover's Return," Neil Young's trippy "After the Gold Rush," Randy Newman's lovely "Feels Like Home" and the atmospheric pop of "Blue Train." Harris, Parton and Ronstadt divide up the leads onthe tracks, each matching her voice to the material that suits it best. Highlights include the bluesy "I Feel the Blues Movin' In" (Parton), the melodic "High Sierra" (Ronstadt) and, surprisingly, "After the Gold Rush" (Parton), which is given an almost New Age feel. The instrumentation, featuring David Grisman's mandolin and Alison Krauss' fiddle, is tasteful and pristine, highlighting the real stars of the record--those three voices. Is Trio II really a country album? Not exactly. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely.

Harmacy
Harmacy

Sebadoh: Lou Barlow (vocals, guitar, bass); Jason Loewenstein (vocals, guitar, bass, drums); Bob Fay (vocals, bass, drums).
Additional personnel: Mark Perretta (guitar, bass).
Engineers: Tim O'Heir, Eric Masunaga, Wally Gagel.
These indie-rock pioneers generally adhere to two songwriting formulas--heartwrenching ballads of love lost, and punked-out guitar freakouts. They keep getting better at both. HARMACY is their first album since frontman Lou Barlow (he of many heartwrenching ballads) danced his way onto the airwaves with his other band, the Folk Implosion, and it's their most accessible album to date. If the airwaves are ready for Sebadoh themselves, then Sebadoh sound like they're ready, too.
With their ballads, Sebadoh are somehow able to write bona fide tearjerkers without seeming melodramatic. These songs are intensely personal tales delineating the fragilities that come with falling in love. The band plays exquisite and beautiful folk-rock, and the vocals are positively tragic. But Sebadoh also know how to have fun. On the other half of HARMACY, Sebadoh play rumbling, cacophonous rock songs. These are where the trio's playful lo-fi roots are most apparent. Songs like "Hillbilly II" and "I Smell A Rat" leave little distance between the Sebadoh of today and the experimental Sebadoh of several years ago.

Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Jeffrey Shurtleff (vocals); Fred Hellerman (guitar); Grady Martin, Norbert Putnam, The Greenbriar Boys.
Producers: Maynard Solomon, Jack Lothrop, Norbert Putnam.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Combining new songs with previously-released material, 1979's double album THE JOAN BAEZ COUNTRY MUSIC ALBUM is divided into four side-long thematic sections: Songs of the South, Love Songs, Roots and Retrospects, and Old-Timey Songs. The definition of "country music" is rather fluid, stretching to accommodate the folk-rock of the Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and Jesse Winchester's "Brand New Tennessee Waltz," Delaney and Bonnie's R&B-influenced "Ghetto" and Gram Parson's country-rock classic "Hickory Wind," alongside tunes by Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash and a handful of traditional folk tunes. With some songsgiven full-band electric backup, a handful of acoustic bluegrass tunes and others strictly solo, the performances are as wide-ranging as the repertoire. Not quite so much a true country album as a rather idiosyncratic reinterpretation of country music, THE JOAN BAEZ COUNTRY MUSIC ALBUM is nonetheless an intriguing release.

System Of A Down
System Of A Down

System Of A Down: Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards, samples); Daron Malakian (guitar, background vocals); Shavo Odadjian (bass); John Dolmayan (drums).
Additional personnel: Rick Rubin (piano).
Principally recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California.
System of a Down sees itself as being an integral part of a new musical revolution of heavy music. On the surface, the band's manifesto seems tangential to Rage Against the Machine's; but musically SOAD is a groove-metal machine, with a sound that incorporates a punk ethic, Panteraesque riffs, and a schizophrenic vocal approach reminiscent of Mike Patton.
Like a dose of chicken soup for a disconnected moshing youth, SYSTEM OF A DOWN is unrelenting. "Sugar" segues from neo-jazz verses into pounding thrash-core choruses. "Spiders" shows more depth, dynamics, and even poetic, melodic vocals. The production of the album is raw and very close to that of a live album, surely a deliberate stroke by producer Rick Rubin (who has put many metal bands on the map under his guidance). On "Soil," vocalist Serj Tankian questions the ideology of democracy. With possibly more conspiracy theories than an episode of THE X-FILES, System of a Down explores the concept of mass influence through technology in "War?" The essence of SYSTEM OF A DOWN can be found in "P.L.U.C.K"; the song's title says it all, an acronym for "politically lying, unholy, cowardly killers."

Engineers include: Tommy Uzzo, Gary "Mon" Noble, Barry O' Hare.
ART & LIFE won the 2001 Grammy Award forBest Reggae Album.
ART & LIFE is the major-label debut from Beenie Man, long a staple of the dancehall scene. Though die-hard fans had feared that the move to a more mainstream label might result in a softening of Beenie Man's sound, ART & LIFE stays true to the powerful sound-system lyrical style that made Beenie Man an underground success. By calling upon frequently sampled beats like Naughty By Nature's "O.P.P." ("Love Me Now") and the Staple Singers' "I'll Take You There" ("I Got a Date"), Beenie Man is able to produce a sound that is at once hard-edged and nostalgic. These 14 tracks range from the Waterhouse, Jamaica-styled title track to the Rio De Janeiro-feel of "Tumble." Guest spots from Mya, Ernie Ranglin, and Wyclef Jean add more strength and familiarity to this exciting mix.

Survivor [Hybrid SACD]
Survivor [Hybrid SACD]

This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Destiny's Child: Beyonce, Kelly, Michelle.
Producers: Beyonce Knowles, Walter Afanasieff.
Engineers include: Brian Springer, James Hoover, Dan Workman.
"Survivor" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
The '70s had Helen Reddy declaring "I am Woman" and Gloria Gaynor vowing "I Will Survive." Two-and-a-half decades down the road, female empowerment is finding its pop music voice in the self-empowerment anthems of Destiny's Child. On SURVIVOR, the pop-R&B trio uses such songs as "Independent Women Part I" (previously heard on the CHARLIE'S ANGELS soundtrack) and the title tune as vehicles for their own statements of gender independence. Seldom has the women's-lib aesthetic been applied to grooves this sultry.
Despite all the social statements, DC isn't above diving into more salacious waters, like "Bootylicious," where the ladies assess their own desirabilityover a sample from Stevie Nicks's '80s hit "Edge of Seventeen." On "Nasty Girls," trashy women receive a verbal dressing-down, but more spiritual matters are addressed in the closing "Gospel Medley," which finds Destiny's Child offering harmonious thanks to the Lord.

SANTIAGO won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
The region of Galicia, a green and hilly area located in the northwest corner of Spain, forms the inspiration for this 1996 album. Ireland and Galicia have religion, music, and a certain Celtic ancestry in common; Spanish sailors were washed up and in some cases settled in Ireland after the destruction of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
The Chieftains, traditional music pilgrims of the world, here seize the opportunity to work with the young recorder, whistle, and gaita (Galician bagpipes) player Carlos Nunez on SANTIAGO. It's intriguing to hear the similarities between traditional Irish and Galician music as they intermingle here. Many other similar musical styles are sampled on SANTIAGO, too, including music from Portugal and even Mexico, with help from Los Lobos. Standout tracks include "Dun Paterfamilias/Ad Honorem" a medieval chant enhanced by the beautiful harp playing of Derek Bell, and the live, joyous romp of "Dublin in Vigo."

Recorded at Real World Studios, London, England.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
With this landmark soundtrack for the controversial 1989 Martin Scorcese film, Peter Gabriel helped usher in a whole new genre: the electronic world music album. True, ambient producer Eno and the new-music trumpeter Jon Hassell pioneered the approach inthe early '80s, but Gabriel didn't merely recreate traditional sounds in the studio. He actually helped create an ongoing collaborative community of modernist world musicians like violinist Shankar, singers Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Qawwali singer from Pakistan whose estactic wail most Western listeners heard for the first time on the title track.
PASSION effectively evokes the ancient wind-parched landscapes of Palestine and North Africa (where the film was actually shot). Though there is prodigious use of drones and percussive tonal "washes," the music is too rooted in history and local culture to be considered either minimalist or new-age. Much like the film, the soundtrack situates Jesus Of Nazareth in a specific time and place through the discerning use of "source" melodies and instruments. In turn, the viewer-listener is able to envision His original mission some 2000 years later. This is no small miracle Gabriel and Scorcese have wrought.

Proving how cyclical the pop music industry's tastes are, the EMPIRE RECORDS soundtrack is evidence that the airwaves are rediscovering melody, the hummable essence of pop that grunge all but muted. The movie takes place in a record store, and the employees listening choices are the mellifluous gems on the album, each song eschewing guitar pomp for a thoughtful arrangement and a memorable tune.
The Meices crash through their cover of Generation X's "Ready Steady Go," while the Gin Blossoms' "Til I Hear It From You" embodies the essence of pop-rock: great harmonies, wistful lyrics, chimey guitar sounds (i.e. "the works"). EMPIRE RECORDS travels well through today's varied pop textures, sampling the more accessible sides of alternative rock. The stunning Motown-style sound of Edwyn Collins' "A Girl Like You" indirectly betrays post-sexual revolution sarcasm ("give me just a little taste so I want more/and now my hands are bleeding and my knees are raw"), over a brooding keyboard fill and reverb-soaked production.
Maybe the EMPIRE SOUNDTRACK addresses the dilemma pointed out on Collins' clever single: "too many pretty singers/not enough pretty songs." The soundtrack does offer nice nuggets of well-written pop songs, proving that you don't have to be a screamer to make some winning tunes.

With the arrival of PICTURE PERFECT MORNING, songwriter Edie Brickell offers some tangible hints as to what life might be like after the New Bohemians. Not surprisingly, given the presence of engineer-producer Roy Halee and producer-husband Paul Simon, the sound is an appealing mix of R&B and folkie sources, animated by Brickell's sing-songy delivery, beatnik inflections and her lovingly detailed, stream of consciousness narratives.
PICTURE PERFECT MORNING chronicles the emotional closures and false starts that distinguish relationships in flux. On "Tomorrow Comes" Brickell envisions the passing of time and the fading of passion over a bumptious New Orleans groove, while her ambivalence finally gets the best of her on "Green," as in green with envy at the happiness of others (or merely nostalgic for a more bucolic rural existence). The folkish "When The Lights Go Down" and the soul-tinted "Good Times" (featuring a vocal break by Barry White) betray an elemental fear of being alone, even as the sly "In The Bath" chronicles her need to get away from everything--her work, her friends...even herself.
